The appearance of a mysterious Golden Pokéstop, a strange Pokémon that follows you around the world and a mysterious ‘?????? Coin’ in Pokémon Go were all surprises after the Dratini Community Day Classic in November.
Turns out it’s all related to a new Ghost-type ‘Coin Chest’ Pokémon, Gimmighoul from the main Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet games.
All of this is clearly related to the games, but what does it all mean for the world of Pokémon Go? Here we cover everything we know about this strange event and what it means for the future.

What are Golden PokéStops and how to find them?
Golden PokéStops are visible from any distance and easily recognizable.
Golden PokéStops appeared for Trainers as soon as the Dratini Community Day event ended on November 5, with random PokéStops changing from their standard blue color to a gold color.
Spinning them dropped a lot of items, like a normal PokéStop, but more, or did you get a mysterious ?????? currency.
In the days following release, Golden PokéStops continued to appear in the game. If you see one, spin it and try to get a mystery coin!
To find them, simply walk around the world and check your local map.
Golden PokéStops appear randomly, but you can see whether they are golden or not from any distance; Unless you want to spin them, you don’t need to go near PokéStops at all!
However, in the days following the event’s start, testing and community reports (from the likes of Unessential on two threads and eevvee33 on reddit) revealed a couple of interesting observations:
- Golden PokéStops remain golden for at least 15 minutes, but no more than 30 minutes after they turn golden.
- If a PokéStop is going to become Gold, it will do so between 00 and 15, or between 30 and 45 after the time (for example, from 1:00 to 1:15 or from 1:30 to 1: Four. Five).
- If a PokéStop is going to turn blue again (that is, stop being Gold), it will do so at an hour and a half or on the hour.
- There are conflicting reports about the existence of two types of golden PokéStops: the idea is that you have a central golden PokéStop that causes other PokéStops around it to turn gold; However, there are doubts about the accuracy of this theory.
Since Niantic doesn’t tend to explain how the mechanics of Pokémon Go work, but instead leaves it up to the community to discover together, we will continue to work with the community to discover how these PokéStops work!
Once you have a coin, Gimmighoul will stand next to your avatar with a speech bubble above his head, telling you where he spots your next coin. You can rotate the map to check the address and then head there to see if you can find what your new friend is looking for!
Remember, you can only carry a maximum of 100 mystery coins at this time. But what do they do?
What is the mystery coin in Pokémon Go?
When you spin a Golden PokéStop, you have a chance to receive a Mystery Coin in your inventory. According to the game item description, this currency is: “A coin with a mysterious air. It seems to have its origin in the Paldea region.”
Interestingly, you can currently carry a maximum of 100 of these coins, although their exact use is unknown. It remains to be seen if this becomes part of a challenge or, more likely, is used to try to trap or transform Gimmighoul.
Jacq.
The first time you come across one of these coins, it starts a conversation with your old friend, Professor Willow, who calls out to his fellow Digglet enthusiast, Jacq, a new character from the upcoming Pokémon Scarlet/Violet games (which , of course, are set in the aforementioned region of Paldea), who seems to know more about these coins than we do.
Jacq is a biology teacher at the academy your character attends in the upcoming Pokémon Scarlet/Violet, releasing on November 18, 2022.

Everything we know about Gimmighoul
Right now, we don’t know much about Gimmighoul, as Niantic and the Pokémon Company are doing their best to drip-feed information, but we do know the following:
- Gimmighoul originates from Paldea, the region of the upcoming Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet games. We know there will be an upcoming tie-in between these two and Pokémon Go sometime in 2023, but the details are still a little hazy.
- Gimmighoul has two forms: Chest form, in which it is slightly reminiscent of a Mimic of [whichever fantasy game you like most]and Roaming Form, which is the form seen in Pokémon Go.
- Chest Form Gimmighoul is a Ghost-type Pokémon, measuring 0.3 m tall and weighing 5 kg.
- Actually ?????? As it turns out, we don’t know anything about the Roaming Form other than it has significantly fewer coins. One of the teaser videos shows that something happens when the chest is full, so maybe giving him more coins will help him transform or even evolve?
The Gimmighoul roving form has been detected in the world of @PokemonGOApp!

- According to the official Pokémon Go website, we will find out more about how to capture the Gimmighoul Roaming Form and how to use mystery coins in “the next research report.” There is currently a gap in the events calendar from November 17th to 23rd, so it is likely that this investigation will take place on that date.

- Those of you who want to purchase Scarlet/Violet will be able to do so on November 18th. Linking any of these games to your Pokémon Go account will allow you to capture the roaming Gimmighoul form in Pokémon Go.
- This is the third Pokémon to debut in Pokémon Go, after Meltan and its evolution, Melmetal.
- Data miners have discovered that Gimmighoul is referred to as ‘pm1080’ in the game code. As a result, players are now speculating that this is the 1080th Pokémon in the National Pokédex. This is entirely possible, as the Pokédex currently sits at 905 with Enamorous. Meltan and Melmetal still lack an official National Pokédex designation.
