NPC island visitors (non-player characters) in Animal Crossing: New Horizons are, as their name suggests, characters who do not take up permanent residence on your island.
Instead, they will visit your island for a day. This could be a specific day of the week or they can be part of a rotating schedule, meaning you are guaranteed a visit from them every two weeks.
Many of these visitors, like Redd and Saharah, allow you to purchase items that no other merchant in the game offers, while KK Slider and Gulliver have unique ways of giving you new items.

Rotating NPC Island Visitor Schedule in Animal Crossing: New Horizons Explained
Most NPC visitors to the islands you encounter in New Horizons follow a rotating schedule, ensuring that you receive at least one visit from each NPC every two weeks.
This means, for example, that if Redd, Saharah, Flick, Gullivarrr and Label visit your island on one, then you are guaranteed to see CJ, Gulliver, Leif and Kicks on the next.

Special NPC Island Visitors in Animal Crossing: New Horizons Explained
There are currently five NPC visitors to the island, in addition to Mabel, in New Horizons who can be considered special, meaning they do not follow the same schedule as other visitors to the island.
These visitors to the island are:
Daisy Mae will always visit your island every Sunday morning to sell her turnips and will leave at 12 noon. In the meantime, you must unlock KK Slider by completing the game’s main story and he will then visit you every Saturday or Sunday if an event intervenes.
Celeste will only visit your island once a week during a meteor show, which Isabelle sometimes announces. Wisp, on the other hand, can appear several times a week between 8 pm and 4 am
