Pokémon Go Hoenn Collection Challenge: How to complete the Collection Challenge and Hoenn Celebration event field research tasks

The Hoenn Collection Challenge in Pokémon Go is part of the Hoenn Celebration, which is part of the month leading up to the Pokémon Go Tour: Kanto event in February.

Collection challenges involve you capturing a list of specific Pokémon connected to the event currently running in Pokémon Go. During the Hoenn Collection Challenge, you will be tasked with capturing a number of Gen 3 Pokémon.

You can find the Pokémon you need for the Hoenn Collection Challenge by completing raids, hatching eggs, completing Hoenn Celebration field research tasks, or simply finding them in the wild.

Tips for completing the Hoenn Collection challenge in Pokémon Go

Here are some tips and tricks to help you complete the Hoenn Collection challenge in Pokémon Go:

  • Placing a Lure Module at a PokéStop is a great way to bring Pokémon to your location. Both the Magnetic Lure Module, which attracts Electric, Steel, and Rock-type Pokémon, and the Mossy Lure Module, which attracts Bug, Grass, and Poison-type Pokémon, are especially useful for the Hoenn Collection Challenge.
  • If you don’t want to use a Lure Module, you can always use Incense to attract Pokémon to your exact location for an hour.
  • If you’re having trouble finding Bagon, start hatching some 5km eggs you collected during the Hoenn Celebration event.

  • Hoenn and Aron’s starter Pokémon can be found in one-star raids, which you can now participate in remotely.
  • Pokémon encounters for the Hoenn Collection Challenge can also be obtained by completing a Field Research task exclusive to the Hoenn Celebration event. You can learn more about these tasks, along with their rewards, in the section below.

The Season of Adventure Abundance is here! The Harvest Festival has brought Smoliv and his evolutions to Pokémon Go! You can also work on the Timed Investigation: Master Ball mission and compete in Go Battle League. Be sure to compete in Shadow Raids, complete routes, use Daily Adventure Incense for a chance to encounter Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres. This incense can also give you encounters with other rare Pokémon in Pokémon Go.

Field Research Tasks for the Hoenn Celebration event in Pokémon Go

You can collect and complete a series of special Field Research tasks as part of the Hoenn Celebration event in Pokémon Go. It is even possible to complete these tasks after the event ends, as long as they are stored in your Field Research Collection.

However, if you want to complete the Hoenn Collection Challenge, it’s a good idea to complete these Field Research tasks during the event, because you’ll get an encounter with a Pokémon that you need to catch.

Below you can find the Hoenn Celebration-exclusive field research tasks, along with their rewards:

  • Reward for catching 3 weather-powered Pokémon: encounter with Treecko, Torchic, or Mudkip
  • Reward for capturing 11 Pokémon: encounter with Plusle or Minun
  • Power up Pokémon 5x the reward: Aron encounter
  • Power up Pokémon 9x the reward: Wailmer encounter

Hoenn Celebration Research Mission Explained in Pokémon Go

In addition to the Collection Challenge, the Hoenn Celebration event in Pokémon Go also has a special timed research quest for you to fully and appropriately call the Hoenn Celebration Event.

Since this is a timed research mission, you will only have until the end of the Hoenn Celebration event to complete it, making the deadline Sunday, January 24 at 8 pm (local time). If you don’t complete the Hoenn Celebration research quest by then, it will disappear forever and you won’t be able to earn the rewards.

Fortunately, the quest is fairly short and, thanks to remote raid passes and incense, you can complete it without having to leave.

Below you can find the three challenges that the Hoenn Celebration Investigation consists of:

‘Hoenn Celebration Research’ Step 1 of 1

  • Catch 2 Groudon – x10 Groudon Candies
  • Catch 2 Kyogre – x10 Kyogre candy
  • Catch 30 Pokémon – x30 PokéBalls

For completing the Hoenn Celebration Research, you will be rewarded with 3000 XP, x1 Silver Pinap Berry, and an encounter with Rayquaza, who should know Hurricane.

How the Hoenn Collection Challenge works in Pokémon Go

Collection challenges in Pokémon Go launched in January 2021 and ran alongside a series of in-game events. In each collection challenge you will be able to capture a number of Pokémon that, thanks to the event, appear more frequently in the wild.

Once you have completed the Collection Challenge by catching them all, you will be rewarded with a number of items and progress towards your Elite Collector medal.

The Hoenn Collection Challenge will take place in conjunction with the Hoenn Celebration event and will be available from Tuesday, January 19 at 10 am (local time) until Sunday, January 24 at 8 pm (local time). The Hoenn Celebration Research mission also shares this time period.

The Collection Challenge can be found in the ‘Today View’, accessed by pressing the Field Research button (the little binoculars) in the bottom right corner of the screen. You may need to scroll left, depending on whether you’ve been analyzing your current field or special research tasks.

After accessing the ‘Today View’, you will find a list of the Pokémon you need to capture to complete the Collection Challenge. Catching a Pokémon in the Collection Challenge rooster will mark it off the list to help you keep track of which ones you’ve caught and which ones you haven’t.

Catching a Pokémon will remove it from your collection challenge list.

Remember: You must complete a Collection Challenge before the associated event ends and disappears forever.

Good luck completing the Hoenn Collection Challenge!
