Pokémon Go Gym Trainer counters, weaknesses and locations

Pokémon Go Gym Trainers are an addition introduced for the one-day Go Tour Johto event.

Each trainer’s team is themed to one of the gyms found in the Johto region, and because of this, all of their Pokémon share a main type: flying, bug, normal, ghost, fighting, steel, ice, or dragon.

Finding and fighting these trainers will help you complete the Go Tour: Johto Battle Challenge, a timed research mission that will only be available on Saturday, February 26.

This research quest, along with the Go Gym Trainer locations, are available to anyone who wants to participate in Go Tour: Johto, whether you brought a ticket or not.

Where are the Go Gym Trainer locations in Pokémon Go?

Gym trainers are trainers that you can fight during the Go Tour Johto event.

To find Go Gym Trainer locations, you need to visit Nervous PokéStops. These PokéStops appear different than normal ones, with the cube on top moving erratically.

Unlike the Go Rocket PokéStops, which share the same twitching behavior, these don’t have a darker appearance, making them a little harder to spot from a distance, so be sure to keep an eye out for the telltale movement.

Unfortunately, the drop rate of Gym Trainers is very low. Even if you have several PokéStops around you, it is still unlikely that any will appear.

Fingers crossed, Niantic will react and increase this before the event ends, but has not yet commented on whether anything will change. Until then, all you can do is keep your sights on the stops and wait for them to appear. For those with tickets, we highly recommend focusing on the other limited-time tasks first, especially those that add to your Collection Challenge medal progress.

Pokémon Go Gym Trainer Weaknesses at a Glance

Because Go Gym Trainers focus on specific Pokémon types, planning your counters for these trainers in Pokémon is pretty simple. Instead of creating a complex team, you can focus on choosing Pokémon that share the type that has the biggest advantage over the Pokémon you’re battling.

That said, some Go Gym Trainers may have dual-type Pokémon, making them a little harder to defeat, but these Pokémon will still be weak to the same types as the other members of the team. Heracross, for example, is a bug and fighting type Pokémon, but, like all bug types, it is still weak to fire attacks.

To aid you in your counterattack planning, we’ve listed which type each Go Gym Trainer has been assigned to, along with what this type’s biggest weaknesses are:

Coach Guy Weaknesses
Prince Robben Flying Electrical, ice and rock types.
Alehouou Bug Fire, flight and rock types.
leon9715 Normal Types of fighting
Brissete Ghost Dark types and ghosts
Terureruru Struggle Fairy, flying and psychic types.
Bathazapokemon Steel Fighting, fire and ground types.
AbsolFairy Ice Types of fighting, fire, rock and steel.
majinsabio Continue Dragon, fairy and ice type.

If you’re looking for Pokémon recommendations, you can visit our best Pokémon page to find the best attackers for each type. Otherwise, read on for tips on Gym Trainer counters, so they appear in the research mission…

Pokémon Go Gym Trainer Flying Counters

The Go Gym Trainer: Flying is weak against Electric, Ice, and Rock types.

Our best Go Gym Flying counters are Raikou, if you have one! – otherwise, the Electivire and Ampharos electric companions function as more common electric types you may have available. On the ice side, Mamoswine is an excellent choice, while Tyranitar and Rampardos are excellent rock options.

Pokémon Go Gym Trainer Bug Counters

The Go Gym Trainer: Bug is weak against fire, flying, and rock types.

Our main Go Gym Bug counters are Fire types, like Darmanitan, Arcanine, and Charizard, or legendaries like Moltres or Entei, if you have them. That should serve you well here, as it’s harder to get good flight recommendations, and if you want a selection of rocks, we offer the trusty Tyranitar.

Pokémon Go Gym Trainer Normal Counters

The Go Gym Trainer: Normal is weak against fighting types.

That limits our options, but the good news is that there are a lot of great fighting types. As such, our Go Gym Normal counters are Lucario, Conkeldurr, Machamp, Hariyama, or even Heracross when you’ve caught one during the event.

Pokémon Go Gym Trainer Ghost Counters

The Go Gym Trainer: Ghost is weak against dark and ghost types.

Our main Go Gym Ghost counter is Tyranitar, who, as you may have guessed from our other counters, is a great Pokémon to lean on. On the Ghost side, Giratina is the best you can get, although Gengar is easier to get and will more than do the job here.

Pokémon Go Gym Trainer Fight Counters

The Go Gym Trainer: Fighting is weak against fairy, flying, and psychic types.

Our best Go Gym Fighting counters are those fairy types, specifically Togekiss and Gardevoir, but on the psychic side, a Mewtwo will easily eliminate any opposition in your path.

Pokémon Go Gym Trainer Steel Counters

The Go Gym Trainer: Steel is weak against fighting, fire, and ground types.

Our best Go Gym Steel counters are Fighting Pokémon that literally pack a punch, so we’re looking at Lucario, Conkeldurr, Machamp, or Hariyama.

Flying types often don’t have the best offensive options, so if you want an alternative to fighting, then Goudon, Garchomp, and Rhyperior are worth looking at on the ground side.

Pokémon Go Gym Trainer Ice Counters

The Go Gym Trainer: Ice is weak against Fighting, Fire, and Steel types.

Our best Go Gym Ice counters are Fighting types again: Lucario, Conkeldurr, Machamp, or Hariyama, but if you want to warm up this trainer, then it’s worth bringing in the Fire Pokémon Darmanitan, Arcanine, and Charizard.

The Season of Adventure Abundance is here! The Out to Play event is currently taking place. You can also work on the Timed Investigation: Master Ball mission and compete in Go Battle League. Be sure to compete in Shadow Raids, complete routes, use Daily Adventure Incense for a chance to encounter Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres. This incense can also give you encounters with other rare Pokémon in Pokémon Go.

Pokémon Go Gym Trainer Dragon Counters

The Go Gym Trainer: Dragon is weak against Dragon, Fire, and Ice types.

Our best Go Gym Dragon counters are the ice types Mamoswine, Weavile, and Eevee Evolution Glaceon.

Otherwise, if you want to pit one dragon against another, then we recommend Dragonite, Garchomp, and Rayquaza.

Best of luck completing the Go Tour: Johto Battle Challenge!
