Learning how to manage Persona 5 Confidant and Social Links is one of the most important elements of how you spend your free time.
In addition to social stats like Knowledge, Guts, Competence, Kindness, and Charm, you’ll want to maximize the limited time you have for friendships between your party members and other characters, which will reward you with combat upgrades, additional story details and possibly engage in some romantic options.
How Social and Trust Links Work in Persona 5
There are 21 confidants in the game that will gradually become available as you progress through the story. Some of them will automatically rank up at specific points, while others will require interaction.

With the exception of Sun and the Confidants from the story progression, you need to make sure you have a corresponding Arcana Persona whenever you talk to them; It’s not a requirement, but it does mean there are fewer time-consuming meetings between rank promotions.
Even if you’re not particularly interested in making friends, it’s worth at least getting everyone in your party to rank 2 so you can use “Baton Pass” during fights.
There is also the option to give Confidants a gift; Delivering the right things will speed up their progress on Social Link, so it’s worth giving them something they like. We list the relevant items as well as Confidant locations later in the article.
Romantic options in Persona 5
Meanwhile, several of the confidants are available as romantic options, and while it is possible to become romantically involved with more than one, this is not recommended as they will turn against you towards the end of the game. These are:

There are no special requirements to romance a character. During your Rank 8-9 interaction with them, you’ll have the option to become romantically involved or remain platonic, but aside from a trophy and a couple of extra lines of dialogue, romance is completely optional.

The car: Ryuji Sakamto
- Availability: Ryuji is the first non-automatic Confidant that you will unlock on April 12.
- Location: You can find it at the top of the stairs outside your classroom or in the Yongenjaya Arcade.
- Gifts: N/A
The Lovers: Ann Takamaki
- Availability: Ann will be available on June 15, is a romance option and requires Guts 2 or higher to surpass rank 2.
- Location: She can be found in the classroom or in the Shibuya Underground Mall.
- Gifts: Chocolates, cakes, puddings, lipsticks and perfumes can be purchased in the Shibuya underground shopping center.
The Emperor: Yusuke Kitagawa
- Availability: Yusuke will be available on June 14. If you want to complete the Strength Arcana, you will need to bring him to rank 6 at least, as one of his unlockable abilities is required to fuse the required Persona.
- Location: Find it at the Shibuya Underground Walkway.

The Priestess: Makoto Niijima
- Availability: Makoto will be available on June 25 and is a romantic option. To progress with her, a Charm rank of 4 or higher is required.

The Empress: Haru Okamura
- Availability: Haru will be available on October 31, he is the last Confidant you will unlock and is a romance option. He requires a Kindness Rank of 3 or higher and, due to his late arrival, may find it difficult to reach the maximum rank.

- Tae will be available on April 15, is a romance option and requires a Charm rank of 3 or higher to advance from rank 4. She is located in the Yongenjaya Clinic.

The Hierophant: Sojiro Sakura
- Sojiro will be available on April 20. Requires a Goodness Rank of 3 or higher to surpass Rank 3 and can be found in Leblanc most days.
The Moon: Yuki Mishima
- Mishima will be available on May 6. It will initially be located in Shibuya, but will move to Shinjuku once the area is available.
