Horizon Zero Dawn walkthrough: Guide and tips for completing the post-apocalyptic adventure

Horizon Zero Dawn: Guide and tips for facing the open world adventure

You can override any machine in the game, as long as you’ve done the work.

Machine Overrides are your way to get those sweet robot dinosaur mounts we’ve all had our eye on since the early days of Horizon Zero Dawn’s announcement.

The ability to start overriding machines will come fairly early in the main questline of A Seeker at the Gates, however, that only gives you the power to do so for some of the smaller machines.

As you log further into your Journal, you will see that all machines can actually be overridden with the correct access. This comes in the form of Cauldrons, dungeon-like side quests that you can do alongside the main quest. Complete the Cauldrons and you can unlock a new level of machine companion to fight at your side. We have a specific guide on Horizon overrides Cauldron locations and solutions, if you’re looking for more on that.

Most combat is about movement.

Combat in Horizon Zero Dawn can be easy at one time and incredibly difficult at another. However, the one principle that underlines everything is movement.

Most machines will have a combination of melee and ranged attacks, and more importantly, most of those attacks will kill you in about two hits. That means your main goal in combat, besides dealing damage yourself, is to avoid getting hit. Dodge, run, slide and roll are the ways to do it.

So if we had to offer just one tip for combat in Horizon, it would be to always be on the move.

It is worth experimenting with different weapons.

Fortunately, we don’t have just one tip for combat: we have two!

It’s easy to ignore the variety of weapons in Horizon and stick with your trusty main combo: the spear and bow. After all, there’s a decent range of elemental and tear damage available with just those two, and they’ve got you covered for both melee and ranged matchups.

In fact, a good portion of our gameplay was essentially done with those two weapons, so it’s perfectly possible to limit yourself to them. However, doing so will prevent you from accessing a number of items that can make your life much easier.

The Slingshot, for example, sounds harmless, but actually fires high-damage elemental grenades at your enemies for area-of-effect damage, while the Rattler is a great choice for close-range spray-and-pray tactics where you you worry more. damage to the body of a machine, for example, than to a specific part.

Tallnecks are your means of unlocking more parts of the map.

Much like the ubiquitous ‘Ubisoft towers’ found in Assassin’s Creed and many others, Tallnecks act as towers that you can climb, and as you activate them, they reveal information about a large portion of the map around them.

After the quest A Seeker at the Gates, several of them will appear on the map as blue turtleneck symbols.

To actually reveal the map, you must climb the Tallneck, a practice that varies from place to place. Some require you to fight or dodge a series of machines, while others are guarded by cultists and bandits. They usually always require you to first climb some type of nearby terrain, to get high enough to then jump onto the parts of their body marked in golden yellow that indicate climbable handholds.

From there, it’s a fairly simple case of jumping from part to part until you can get on the Tallneck’s head, activate the signal by pressing Triangle in the center of the disc-shaped platform, and then abseil down in slow motion from the edge. , like the action hero that you are.
