Zelda: Breath of the Wild Shrine locations, Shrine maps for all regions, and how to trade Shrine Orbs for Heart Containers

Shrines in Zelda: Breath of the Wild are small puzzle rooms found throughout the game world.

Introduced at the beginning of the game as a means of unlocking Runes (special abilities Link can use to manipulate objects to solve puzzles); They then reward Link with Spirit Orbs, which can be exchanged for permanent stamina upgrades and heart containers.

While they are considered optional, visiting them will make your quest much easier and will host some of the best challenges in the game, so be sure to take the time to visit as many as you can.

Shrine Location Maps for Zelda: Breath of the Wild

There are many shrines throughout the game (120, to be exact) and each region contains a handful each. You can see them from afar because of their characteristic red glow; Not unlike the Towers that sprout throughout the land, but closer to the ground.

Of course, some are harder to find than others, often appearing out of sight or out of reach, so accessing them can be a puzzle in itself.

Once you have entered and completed his trial, you will be rewarded with a Spirit Orb upon its conclusion, which is used to trade for permanent Heart Containers and Stamina Upgrades, which you can read about later in this article, as well as additional treasures, some of which are exclusive to that Sanctuary.

Below are maps of each region and the location of their Shrines, as well as guides to the Shrines we have found so far. Expect continued updates as we continue to explore the massive world of Hyrule.

How to exchange spirit orbs for heart containers

Although you can cook new recipes to obtain temporary heart containers and stamina boosts, only by collecting spirit orbs can you permanently increase their gauges.

As you’ll see when you complete the Isolated Plateau quest when you visit the Temple of Time, you can exchange Spirit Orbs for Heart Containers at statues around the world.

Some villages will have a statue you can pray at, like Kakariko Village, so pick your favorite and visit it and you’ll have the option to upgrade your health or stamina.

Fortunately, the choice is not permanent. There is a special statue in Hateno Village that can allow you to transfer your hearts to resistance and vice versa, for a cost of 20 rupees.

This is particularly useful when trying to collect the Master Sword, which requires a certain amount of Hearts, so transferring your leftover Stamina, even temporarily, to your Heart gauge can be useful.

To find this statue, head to Hateno Village’s Firly Pond, to the southwest.

You can also get a full Heart Container by completing each of the four Divine Beasts, so playing just the main quest will give you upgrades. But if you want to maximize everything, then you need to go deeper into the Shrines.
