Skyrim Houses – Where to buy and how to build a house

Skyrim Houses - Where to buy and how to build a house

In a game where you can accumulate countless trinkets, get married, and adopt children, it makes sense that you could also dabble in home ownership.

Skyrim houses are unlocked when you complete certain quests and turn in a considerable amount of gold, allowing you to have a base in some of the largest cities in the game.

Each house also allows you to upgrade and furnish each domicile for a small fee, and with the arrival of the Hearthfire expansion, allows you to own additional land and build your own as well.

If you’re playing the 2021 Anniversary Edition, we’ve got explanations for features like fishing.

Where to buy houses in Skyrim

Breeze home (Whiterun)

Cost: 5000 gold

Location: From where you enter Whiterun, it is the second building on the right, after Warmaiden.

How to unlock: To buy it, talk to Proventus Avenicci in Dragonsreach (we find Living Quarters in it) after you have completed the Dragons Rising story quest.

Hjerim (wind helmet)

Cost: 12,000 gold

Location: This is in the northwest corner of the city, across from the House of the Cruel Sea.

How to unlock: Complete the ‘Blood on Ice’ quest in Windhelm, which you can activate by heading to the graveyard after midnight. Part of the quest allows you access to the house, after which you can talk to Jorlief in the Palace of Kings, who will sell it to you.

Honey side (riften)

Cost: 8000 gold

Location: From where you enter Riften, turn right and you will see the house at the end of the corner.

How to unlock: You have to buy it before becoming Thane in Riften. To do this, you must impress Jarl Laila, Ruler of Riften; you can do this by completing the skooma dealer quest (chat with Wujeeta at Riften Fishery in the docks area to start the tour) and after that, increase your reputation from the citizens of Riften by running errands (run and they will give you tasks to do ). After that, report to the Jarl and then talk to the butler Anuriel to buy it.

Proudspire Mansion (Solitude)

Cost: 25,000 gold

Location: You can find it in the center of the main street, on the right “branch” of the city, next to the Skyrim Faction Bards College.

How to unlock: You can buy it along the way to become the Thane of Solitude. Visit Falk Firebeard in Solitude, who will ask you to clear a nearby cave. Chat with Jarl Elisif the Fair telling him that he has placed the horn in the shrine, then chat with Falk Firebeard again for a chance to purchase the property.

Vlindrel Hall (Markarth)

Cost: 8000 gold

Location: To locate it, as soon as you enter the city, turn right and take the steep stairs in the corner. Go back up the next flight of steep stairs and the house will be at the top.

How to unlock: There are a few ways to obtain this property, the easiest being to side with the Stormcloaks in the Civil War and then chat with Jarl Thongvor Silver-Blood. Otherwise, he sees the Understone Keep inside Markarth and speaks to Jarl Igmund. Earn his trust and complete his quest line, where Steward Raerek will allow you to purchase him.

How to build houses in Skyrim

If you own the Hearthfire expansion (which comes as part of the Special Edition), you will be able to purchase three plots on different properties and build houses on them. Here’s how to unlock each plot:

Heljarchen Hall (The Pale Hold)

Cost: 5000 gold

Location: “Just follow the road south from Dawnstar, past Fort Dunstad, then head south. The terrain is near Giants’ Gap, right on the board with Whiterun Hold.”

How to unlock: Chat with whoever the Jarl is in The White Hall of Dawnstar to start becoming Thane in the Pale and unlock this. If it’s Jarl Skald, be prepared to complete the ‘Waking Nightmare’ quests and a quest to kill a nearby giant, while Jarl Brina (depending on main story actions) should immediately grant you access.
