This week’s Featured Hour is all about Bivalve Pokémon; While this applies to pretty much all Shell Pokémon, we’re here to catch a Shiny Shellder in Pokémon Go.
Shellder, as one of the original 150 and, believe it or not, one half of Slowbro/Slowking, has a unique place in the franchise. His evolution, Cloyster, is not unknown in Go Battle League, the competitive player versus player portion of Pokémon Go. So if you are still looking for a perfect 100% IV Shellder, this will be the perfect time to look for it.
As usual, catching as many Pokémon as possible is the plan for this week’s Spotlight, although the main attraction really is the opportunity to maximize the double candy transfer bonus that runs alongside the event. Remember, taking the time to clean out your storage makes it easier to catch more Pokémon in the long run.

Shellder IV Stats 100% Perfect in Pokémon Go
This week’s Featured Hour is a great opportunity to catch a Shellder with perfect IV stats.

“Perfect,” of course, means two things in Pokémon Go. First, there’s the max build, 100% IV, which is the 15/15/15 you’re looking for for your 4* Pokédex, Raids, and Master League. However, because of how CP is calculated using these three stats, a perfect Pokémon IV is usually just the best version of itself in Master League, raids, and Go Rocket battles.
Of course, you can’t see a Pokémon’s IV without catching it first, so it’s helpful to know the CPs at which a perfect Shellder will spawn.
If you’re at level 30 (or higher), you’ll ideally be looking for the following CPs for a perfect 15/15/15 Shellder:
The wild CP value aligns with your trainer level until you reach level 30, and since the majority of the player base is now above this level, we’ve kept these values for the sake of simplicity. However, these values will be different if you are currently below level 30.
Is Cloyster good at PvP?
Cloyster is a solid and reliable Pokémon in the Go Battle League, but it is by no means a star.

By running Ice Shard, Icy Wind, and Hydro Pump, this water/ice type leans a little more towards its secondary type. In the Big League, he’s perfectly fine, but in no way stands out. You’re looking at two attacks: Hydro Pump as a nuclear weapon and Icy Wind as a low energy debuff, which reduces the enemy’s attack by one level. This means victories against Altaria, Noctowl, Alolan Ninetails, Swampert, and Azumarill, but losses against Medicham, Lanturn, Galarian Stunfisk, Trevenant, and Sableye.
When you reach Ultra League, Cloyster’s bulk becomes more important, thanks in part to his high CP cap. As such, Ultra League is the best place to run a Cloyster; especially if you have a perfect 14/0/14, which reaches 2496 CP at level 45.
In terms of matchups, this means wins against Pidgeot, Trevenant, Alolan Muk, Giratina, and Swampert, which is a decent list of Pokémon to beat. However, you lose to Charizard, Walrein, Obstagoon, Cresselia, and Tapu Fini, most of which are meta-relevant Pokémon. So while he’s not in the strongest position in this meta, he’s not in a bad place either.
Master League, however, is a different story: with a maximum CP of 2880, that volume is no longer a factor. Leaning into Shadow is the way to go here, as it’s more about hitting hard with Ice-type attacks. Mamoswine, Yveltal, Excadrill, Togekiss, and Garchomp are good matchups for you, but you will lose to Dialga, Zacian, Gyarados, Lugia, and Dragonite.
The Season of Adventure Abundance is here! Its first event is A Paldean Adventure, which sees the true launch of Gen 9 and the special research mission A Paldean Adventure. You can also work on the Timed Investigation: Master Ball mission and compete in Go Battle League. Be sure to compete in Shadow Raids, complete routes, use Daily Adventure Incense for a chance to encounter Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres. This incense can also give you encounters with other rare Pokémon in Pokémon Go.
Is there a shiny Shellder in Pokémon Go?
Yes, as with all Kanton Pokémon, there is a Shiny Shellder in Pokémon Go!

Shiny Shellder was released in June 2018 as part of the 2018 Water Festival.
What does the shiny Shellder look like?
Shiny Shellder is pretty obvious and changes his purple shell for a bright orange one. You certainly won’t confuse it with a normal Shellder!
This makes the brilliant Cloyster even more disappointing. Simply grab its purple shell and slide the red slider down in Photoshop. It’s such a lazy shiny that we wouldn’t be surprised if someone decided to skip this evolution.

Other things to know about Shellder Spotlight Hour
Spotlight Hour always comes with a bonus you can take advantage of, and this week it’s a double transfer sweet treat. As always, this runs throughout the hour and affects more than just the Pokémon in the spotlight.
But this is not the most important bonus of this week’s Featured Hour. Instead, it’s something the game doesn’t advertise at all: it’s the fact that catching Shellder actually gives you extra stardust.
At 1000 Stardust per catch, this is actually one of the most lucrative Pokémon to target if you’re short on purple material. Combine this with a Star Piece, head to an area with dense spawns and grab as much as you can as fast as you can. Depending on your skill level, amount of time, and spawn density, you could easily get the better part of a million Stardust from this.
But, coming back to the real bonus of this hour: double candy transfer, this is a very important bonus that you should take full advantage of. The smartest way to maximize this is to have a Tag in your Pokémon storage just for this purpose. We recommend creating one called ‘Transfer’, where you can place the Pokémon you don’t want or need. Instead of transferring them as you detect them, hold them for events like these, when you can transfer them in bulk. All those candies add up very quickly and are especially useful when transferring something like a Mewtwo for double candy or after a big event like Hoenn Tour!
It’s also good to note that, thanks to Shellder being a Water-type, catching a bunch during this Featured Hour will add progress to your respective catch bonus medal.
