PS5 Backwards Compatibility List: Which PS4 games will be backwards compatible with PS5?
Sony has said that the “overwhelming majority” of the more than 4,000 PS4 games will be playable on PS5.
This was confirmed with a list of games that No work on PS5, rather than those that do, making it easy to know what works at a glance.

This means that if a game is not listed above, it will be playable on PS5. This includes PSVR titles and those that require the use of PlayStation Move or PlayStation Camera, although the PS5’s own HD camera will not work with PS4 games.
Playing PS4 games on PS5 is a case of inserting the disc (if you have a PS5 with a disc drive) or downloading the game from your game library if you bought it digitally.
Additionally, this presumably means that PT, which is no longer available to download but can still be played if you have it installed on your PS4, will work on PS5, if you can port it when upgrading your console. However, this specific case will need to be tested to confirm compatibility.
PS5 Backward Compatibility Differences, Improvements, and Limitations Explained
Sony has said that the following performance differences may apply when the PS5 plays PS4 games:
- “Some” games can be improved with Game Boost, which will provide higher or smoother frame rates.
- Some PS4 games “may exhibit errors or unexpected behavior” when played on PS5. Sony warned that it recommends players try a PS4 game before purchasing DLC ”to see if they are satisfied with the gaming experience.”
- Some features and functions will not be supported; It is unknown what exactly they are.

- PlayStation Camera (for supported PSVR games, adapter required*)
*There may be upgraded versions of PSVR games for PS5, which could technically mean these accessories will work with PS5 games, but until fully confirmed, this is expected to mean compatibility with PSVR games for PS4.
To clarify: DualShock 4 games and PSVR accessories will work with PS5, but only when using backwards compatible PS4 games, meaning you can’t use a DualShock 4 to play a PS5 title.
What consoles will the PS5 be compatible with?
The PS5 will only be natively compatible with PS4 games.
In September 2020, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan, speaking to Famitsu (via Ars Technica), confirmed that the PS5 will not natively support PS3, PS2, and PS1 discs.
This confirms a speculation started by a Ubisoft support page the same month, which seemingly confirmed that the PS5 would not be compatible with PS1, PS2, or PS3 games.
However, the question of whether the PS5 will be compatible with PlayStation Now remains to be confirmed. If so, players will be able to stream a variety of PS4, PS3, and PS2 titles through the service, which will be the best option.

What else has Sony said about PS5 backwards compatibility?
Details on specific PS5 backwards compatibility have been slow to come – the short list of unsupported games was confirmed just a month before the system’s launch.
During the PS5 system specs deep dive in March 2020, Mark Cerny revealed that almost all of the top 100 PS4 games (ranked by play time) would be playable on the PS5 at launch.
This was later developed in a post by Hideaki Nishino on the official PlayStation blog about PS5 specifications. There it was explained that Sony hopes that most games released for PS4 will be playable on PS5.
In May 2020, Eurogamer revealed that any games submitted for PS4 certification after mid-July must also be compatible with the PS5.
Finally, in September 2020, Sony revealed the PlayStation Plus Collection, which would include several PS4 games playable on PS5 as part of the subscription. This seemingly confirms a number of PS4 games that can be played on PS5, but it’s unknown if owning these games separately will be playable via backwards compatibility outside of the subscription, or if these games will offer any sort of PS5 upgrade.
