How to shield surf in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

Link hasn’t forgotten how to protect himself from the surf after the upheaval in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – he can still skate downhill at full speed if you know how to do it right.

But the mechanics aren’t well explained in the game itself, so this guide will walk you through everything you need to know about shield navigation in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

You’ll learn what the buttons are for navigating with shields, the damage it will do to the durability of your shields, and how to use Fuse to further enhance navigating with shields.

How to protect surfing in Zelda Tears of the Kingdom

To protect the surf in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you must first find a slope and make sure you have a flat shield equipped. Hold it with ZL, press X to jump, and then quickly press A to start navigating.

If you’re not on a slope, Link will jump off the shield immediately, but this is a good way to practice the combo if you want.

If you are on a slope, Link will begin to navigate downwards. You can control its movement with the joysticks, in the same way as if you were skydiving or paragliding. Reduce speed by pulling back on the left joystick. If the slope is shallow enough, this will allow Link to jump. If it is now, you will have to press B when you want to stop browsing.

Note that while shield surfing is a great way to move quickly if the terrain is suitable (and it’s fun!), it causes durability damage to your shields. If you move quickly when the shield breaks, Link will fall and take damage.

How to use Fuse for even better shield browsing

Unlike Breath of the Wild, Link no longer needs to use his shield just for his surfing adventures. Thanks to Fuse, he can turn his shields into skateboards, karts, and basically any type of chaotic contraption you can think of.

To fuse something with a shield, use the L menu, select Fuse, and then use LR when it’s close enough to the object you want to fuse with.

Using Fuse can be handy. For example, it can make it easier to balance: fusing something wide with a shield allows Link to use rails or other thin slopes with less risk of falling. But it’s also great for making your Tony Hawk dreams come true. Zelda can wait.

Note that shields will continue to lose durability while fused, and when broken, the contraption will fall apart.
