Pokémon Scarlet and Violet breeding, from egg moves to perfect IV, abilities and natures explained

Breeding is more important than ever to get the strongest Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet.

However, the daycare is nowhere to be found, so the way of doing it is a little different now.

Instead, you’ll need to master the picnic, including giving your Pokémon the right ingredients in their sandwiches to boost those Eggs.

What hasn’t changed, however, is that breeding is still the best way to get competitive level Pokémon with perfect IVs, good abilities, positive nature, and special egg moves. In this guide we will explain how to make sure your newborn Pokémon are as strong as possible.

7 things we liked (and 4 things we didn’t like) about Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

How to breed in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Breeding Pokémon in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet can now be done anywhere, anytime, thanks to the picnic system. Whenever you have a picnic with two compatible Pokémon, there is a chance that they will produce eggs.

There are some simple rules for this:

  • Compatible means a male and female Pokémon in the same egg group.
  • If the Pokémon are of different species, the Pokémon that hatches from the Egg will be the same species as the mother.
  • However, any Pokémon, regardless of gender or species, can breed with a Ditto, so it is very useful to have these Pokémon around.

To collect eggs at a picnic, look at the basket on the ground near the picnic table.

The basket seems to accumulate eggs as you spend time in picnic mode, even if you just stand still, so leave the Switch alone and do something else if you want.

However, there are some ways to speed things up and therefore increase the number of eggs you get. It involves buying ingredients in the different food stores in Paldea.

What sandwich ingredients will increase the power level of the egg?

To produce more eggs during picnics, you will need to increase your egg power by using sandwiches. A high Egg Power means that eggs will appear more frequently in the basket near the table.

From the basic menu, the Jam Sandwich will increase your Egg Power.

You can also make a sandwich with Egg Power in Creative mode. There are many ingredients that increase the power of the egg, including strawberry, banana, apple, watercress, basil, kiwi and pineapple. To season, you can use jam, whipped cream, olive oil, jam and vinegar.

It is usually necessary to use more than one of these to ensure increased Egg Power rather than any other effect. If you use several, you will get a lot of eggs very quickly, so stock up!

Now we know the basics: how do we influence key elements like IVs, moves, skills and natures, as well as other factors like the ball it appears on? Let’s go through all of these one by one.

How to Pass IVs When Breeding in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Breeding is one of the key ways to ensure your Pokémon have the best stats possible. This is particularly important if you want them to hold their own in competitions.

Breeding IV also appears to work similarly in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet as it did in previous games. Hatched Pokémon appear to inherit three randomly selected IVs from the two parent Pokémon, and have three IVs set completely randomly.

However, there are ways to increase the amount of IVs that come from the parent Pokémon.

The first of them is to use the power items: Power Weight, Power Bracer, Power Belt, Power Lends, Power Band and Power Anklet. These should transmit the IVs of HP, Attack, Defense, Sp. Atk, sp. Defense and Speed respectively.

This is ideal if you want to pass a specific statistic down from parent to child. Power items can be found in Delibird Presents, in the general goods menu, and cost 10,000 Pokédollars each. (If you need easy money, our explanation on how to make money in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet can help you.) If they don’t appear, try to come back when you have more Gym Badges.

The second method of transmitting IV is the Destiny Knot. This can be obtained from Delibird Presents in Mesagoza (costs 20,000 Pokédollars), although you may need several Gym Badges first.

It seems that if a parent Pokémon has the Knot of Fate, five IVs will be taken from the two parents, instead of three. Although this is still random, it means that there is a better chance of the child Pokémon getting good stats if the parents are also strong.

How to Stream Egg Moves by Breeding in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Egg Moves are moves that a Pokémon can only learn through breeding, more or less. In fact, there’s a new twist on Pokémon Scarlet and Violet that we’ll get to in a second!

Egg moves can be passed down when either parent Pokémon knows a particular move that the child Pokémon wouldn’t normally know, but can learn using this method.

Typically, a parent Pokémon of a different species that knows the move will be used, and the parent Pokémon will determine the species of the child Pokémon. In this way unusual movements can be transmitted.

Chains can also be developed with certain moves and Pokémon if you check the move pools and egg pools carefully.

However, as I mentioned, an extra twist is added in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. During a picnic, if a Pokémon is holding Mirror Grass and has an open slot on its move list, it can learn certain egg moves from other Pokémon at the picnic. Confusingly, no actual eggs are required!

This makes getting Egg Moves much easier. For example, I was able to get an Eevee the Curse move by simply having a picnic with Eevee and Sandygast and waiting a few minutes.

Mirror Grass can be purchased at Delibird Presents for 30,000 Pokédollars, from the Battle Items menu. If it doesn’t appear, try coming back when you have more Gym Badges.

How to transmit breeding skills in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

It seems that transmitting abilities works the same way as in other recent Pokémon games.

If a Pokémon can have more than one ability, it is more likely to be born with the same ability that the mother Pokémon had. However, he could still hatch with the other ability, but this is less likely.

If the mother Pokémon has a hidden ability, it can also be passed to the hatched Pokémon. It also appears that the parent Pokémon can pass on hidden abilities if it is crossed with a Ditto.

How to transmit natures by breeding in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Natures seem to be selected at random for child Pokémon. However, if you give the parent Pokémon an Eternal Stone to hold, there is a high chance that the born Pokémon will have the same Nature. This works for both the male and female Pokémon.

Everstones can be purchased at Delibird Presents for 3,000 Pokédollars each, although you may need to have some Gym Badges under your belt for them to appear.

How to Pass Breeding Poké Balls in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet appear to work like other previous Pokémon games, meaning the hatched Pokémon will come in the same Poké Ball as the parent Pokémon. If the parent Pokémon come in different balls, it will be a random chance that will be passed down from generation to generation.
