Pokémon Go’s Unown is one of Gen 2’s most elusive creatures, and has already achieved near-mythical status among players.
In addition to being an incredibly rare Pokémon spawn, Unown only tends to appear during special events in Pokémon Go, such as the annual Go Fest and the Safari Zone.
It may also be available in Eggs as part of global events, such as the Ultra Bonus unlock in September 2019, when the U, L, T, R, and A glyphs were available.
Last but not least, Unown occasionally participates in raids, but as with the above, this is incredibly rare.
So what do you do if you can’t attend these events, which are often held in major cities somewhere else in the world? While there is no definitive way to catch it, there are ways to increase your success in finding and catching Unown in Pokémon Go.

What is Unown?
Unown, the symbol Pokémon, was introduced in the Pokémon Gold and Silver portable entries. It has 28 shapes, one for each letter of the Latin alphabet (AZ), along with a question mark and an exclamation mark. These tend to create special messages for players in the main series games, such as in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, where Unown literally gave hints on where to catch them.
Catching your first three Unown in Pokémon Go will unlock a new medal specifically for finding all forms, which will upgrade to Silver for 10 unique forms captured, and then to Gold for all 26.
While this medal doesn’t increase your chances of finding or catching Unown, it is a Psychic-type Pokémon, so upgrading your Psychic Medal to Platinum will, of course, help increase your catch rate.
Like Pokémon with multiple forms, such as Castform, Unown only occupies one entry in the Pokedex. However, it shows all the shapes you’ve captured, each represented by a floating bubble.
However, it’s worth noting that since Furfrou and the ability to shapeshift were added, this is not a form you can shapeshift; If you want Unown B, you have to catch Unown B, for example.
Other interesting things to note are that Unown does not evolve, is weak to Bug, Dark, and Ghost-type Pokémon (although it has no real use in Go Battle League), has no gender, and in Pokémon Go has the moves Hidden Power and Struggle. .

The general consensus is that unless part of an event, Unown spawns are completely random and incredibly rare.
While there is some research and debate about whether Unown is assigned to certain spawn points or biomes, including some London-specific research, there has been nothing conclusive. Unown could be part of many biomes, or none, but either way it is incredibly rare to find.
So how do you increase your chances of finding one? By simply keeping a keen eye on your in-game radar and possibly using radars and online trackers (unofficial and fan-organized) in many of the world’s cities that can detect the appearance of rare creatures.
Unless you can catch one at an event, catching Unown is a case of patience and a good dose of luck – something seasoned Pokémon Go players should be used to by now!

How to catch all Unown in Pokémon Go
Completing the ‘Unowndex’ is one of those badges of honor that Pokémon players love to chase. However, doing so in Pokémon Go is much more difficult than in any of the main series games, especially if you’re late to the party.
There are a few other things you should know about Unown:
- Certain Unown cards (or forms) appear during special events. At Pokémon Go Fest in Chicago, CHIAGO appeared, while EUROP appeared during the Unusual Sightings event and GDC during the 2018 Game Developers Conference.

- As part of Go Fest 2020, Unown released the first shiny variants, specifically for the letters GO.
- There’s no egg group that Unown is a part of, so don’t expect one to suddenly hatch from a 10km egg, unless, again, it’s part of a special event.
- As with certain rare Pokémon, such as Larvitar and Dratini, Unown will not be part of any nests.
- According to Reddit, capturing enough Unown forms and upgrading their medal to Silver or Gold will not reward you with any capture bonuses.
- Despite its random nature, it is possible to get one using a lure, according to several Reddit users. It’s still random and incredibly rare, so don’t get your hopes up of finding one this way, just know that it’s possible! It’s especially important to remember this during events like Go Fest, when Unown only appears when you’re using a decoy.
- When does spawn without using a lure, the way will be the same for all users in the vicinity.
- Thanks to the addition of remote raid passes, if Unown is in the raid group at a given event, be sure to ask a friend in the area to send you an invite. A great way to meet international players is through raid hosting apps like Poke Genie.
This means that the only reliable way to catch them all is to travel to the locations where these events occur or trade with someone who has. But since you need to be physically close to the person you are negotiating with, this is extremely difficult to arrange and unlikely to happen. Personally, we’re hoping for an Unown Community Day where you’ll have to catch them all as part of a collection challenge.
