Pokémon Go Team Rocket: How to find Team Rocket PokéStops and everything we know about Invasions

Team Go Rocket appears in Pokémon Go as part of Invasions, bringing with it the addition of Shadow Pokémon.

Team Go Rocket’s arrival was first teased after Pokémon Go Fest in Chicago in 2019, and Grunts began appearing in photos that festival-goers had taken with Pokémon Go’s AR photography mode.

Then, at Pokémon Go Fest in Dortmund later that year, not only did the photo-taking Grunts return, but a Team Go Rocket hot air balloon floated in the sky.

In this page:

Update (July 25): Team Rocket is back in the game after a two-day absence following its debut on Monday the 23rd, and with it comes the new mission A Worrying Situation. Along the way, we see some adjustments to Shadow Pokémon, specifically a lower catch rate and more aggressive behavior during the catch phase.

How to find Team Rocket in Pokémon Go

First of all, you must be a Trainer level 8 or higher for Team Rocket to appear in your game.

Team Rocket appears at PokéStops that have been invaded. These PokéStops appear different than normal ones, with a slightly darker appearance that contracts erratically.

Don’t see any Team Rocket PokéStops? They are rare, at least in the film’s debut.

Early reports suggest they only appear for 30 minutes at a time without warning (thanks meier-andersen on reddit for confirming).

As such, it pays to periodically keep an eye on the map view for suspicious PokéStops. These Team Rocket PokéStops should appear to all other nearby players, so if you’re part of a WhatsApp or Discord group, be sure to share their arrival with others.

When you get close enough, the Team Rocket logo will appear above the PokéStops, as well as a Team Rocket Grunt located there.

How Team Go Rocket Invasions and Team Rocket Battles Work in Pokémon Go

Interaction with Team Rocket PokéStops works as follows:

  1. Team Go Rocket will invade a PokéStop for 30 minutes straight.
  2. Approach the PokéStop and you can fight the Grunt by touching it in a trainer battle.
  3. If you defeat Team Rocket Grunt’s Shadow Pokémon team, the Grunt will abandon one of them.
  4. You will have the opportunity to capture this Shadow Pokémon.
  5. If you get caught, you can keep the Shadow Pokémon and then you can purify it.

The battle against Team Go Rocket is similar to trainer battles, and each Team Go Rocket Grunt will be assigned a Pokémon type. You will know in advance when they choose the dialogue. For example:

  • “These waters are treacherous!” – Water type encounter
  • “Do you know how hot Pokémon’s fire breath can be?” – Fire type encounter
  • “Do not mess with us!” – Grass type encounter

Meanwhile, capturing Shadow Pokémon works similarly to Raids, with a limited number of Premier Balls at your disposal for you to use.

Pokémon Go Team Go Rocket Rewards

Once the battle is over, you will receive 500 Stardust, as well as the chance to catch the Shadow Pokémon.

The Shadow Pokémon is the first one you fought as part of your encounter with Grunt.

To catch the creature, you will receive a base number of Premier Balls (5) and then additional PokéBalls will be rewarded based on a number of factors:

  • How many of your Pokémon survive the trainer battle?
  • Your Purify Pokémon Medal Rank
  • Your medal rank for defeating Team Rocket

The capture rate is equivalent to that of raids (a change made a couple of days after the feature launched), so if you’re struggling, getting that extra medal rank will help you out.

If you run out of balls, you’ll have to defeat the Grunt again for another chance to catch the Shadow Pokémon.

Once you have the Pokémon, it will be added to your collection and will have different stats and moves. Our Shadow Pokémon and How to Purify Them page explains everything you need to know about this process.

The Season of Adventure Abundance is here! The Halloween event has returned, bringing with it Greavard and Houndstone. Party Play, Pokémon Go’s multiplayer feature, is here, along with the Welcome Party quest. You can also work on the Timed Investigation: Master Ball mission and compete in Go Battle League. Be sure to compete in Shadow Raids, complete routes, use Daily Adventure Incense for a chance to encounter Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres. This incense can also give you encounters with other rare Pokémon in Pokémon Go.

What else do you need to know about Team Go Rocket and invasions in Pokémon Go?

Above are the essentials of how Invasions and Team Rocket work in the game, but there are plenty of other minor details to keep in mind:

Meeting with Team Rocket in Pokémon Go

  • Although you can only fight Team Rocket Grunt once at a specific PokéStop, there is no limit to the number of Grunts you can fight in a day.
  • There are no restrictions on how close encounters can be with Team Rocket PokéStops: reports show that PokéStops next to each other can spawn Grunts there. Keep your eyes peeled: you might get lucky!
  • Unlike raid encounters, there is no limit to the time of day that Team Rocket encounters can appear, so they can appear during the night and early morning hours.
  • If you leave the encounter with Grunt, he will disappear, according to early reports. It’s unknown if this is a mistake or intentional, but if you plan on fighting, be sure to commit!

Team Rocket Medals

  • There are two new medals available as part of the Team Go Rocket update, which track the following stats. The higher their levels, the more Premier Balls you will receive during the Shadow Pokémon capture phase:
    • Purifier: Purify [X amount of] Shadow Pokémon.
    • Hero: defeat [X amount of] Team Go Rocket Grunts.

What else is coming soon with the Team Rocket and Invasions feature in Pokémon Go?

  • Data miners (like Kelven91 on reddit) have discovered two missions, which will be released alongside the Team Go Rocket Invasion update at some point, joining Jump-Start Research and the other special research tasks. These will be called:
    • Rocket Battle Team
    • Purify Pokémon
  • Finally, the datamines also revealed something called a Route Marker. The name of this item suggests that it will mark a route on the game map and could be used in conjunction with the introduction of Team Go Rocket PokeStops. Beyond that, that’s all we know!
