Dragonrot in Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice serves as a sort of punishment for dying and resurrecting too often. Or at least serves as an incentive not to do so when possible.
However, there is a cure for Dragonrot that helps you mitigate or completely eliminate any disadvantages of the disease, but there is a problem. There’s also the question of how Dragonrot affects NPCs in Sekiro, which we’ll explain in more detail, along with the best way to fix that issue, later.

Dragonrot is Sekiro’s way of discouraging you from dying repeatedly, as if the loss of Sen and XP wasn’t enough of a problem, and as if you were doing it on purpose anyway.
Still, that’s its main function: the more you die, the worse Dragonrot will get, and the worse it gets, the lower your chances of receiving Unseen Aid, the phenomenon that allows you to keep all your Sen and XP upon death, which happens when you die. chance.

However, there are more details to take into account.
Dragonrot itself is actually a disease. Every time you acquire Rot Essence in your inventory, another NPC in the game contracts the Dragonrot disease. There is a chance that you will receive Rot Essence every time you die, but the general understanding is that, on average, about one in ten deaths you will get another Rot Essence, i.e. another affected NPC.
The Rot Essence will have a name, indicating which NPC is affected this time; It seems that even NPCs you haven’t met yet can hire her, although those you’ve already met get priority first. Rotten Essence: Sculptor means that the Sculptor, first encountered in the Dilapidated Temple, has trapped it, for example. He will be the first to catch it (when you do, instead of being teleported back to the Sculptor’s Idol upon death, you will return to the Dilapidated Temple and will have to talk to him, and then to Emma, to begin the simple steps of the mission to cure it).
Aside from the reduction in your chances of receiving invisible aid, the other main disadvantage is that NPCs affected by Dragonrot will not be able to give you any additional progress on your quests with them. You will have to eliminate the Dragonrot and remove the Rot Essence from your inventory before you can continue with any quest they may offer you. The good news is that it doesn’t actually seem to kill or remove any NPCs permanently.
Your invisible aid will start at 30% and decrease by a small percentage with each piece of Rot Essence you acquire; the first piece of Rot Essence acquired will actually reduce it by half to 15%, and the rest will reduce it by smaller amounts.
The last and key thing you should know about Dragonrot is that it is acquired when die all alone. In our experience, your use of the resurrection mechanic, where you can revive and continue fighting or fleeing, does not seem to affect the speed at which you acquire Dragonrot. Resurrecting, resting on a Sculptor’s Idol to restore the lost resurrection charge, and continuing means that you won’t gain any Essence of Rot no matter how many times you repeat that process.

Sekiro Dragonrot Cure Details: How to Cure Dragonrot
Unless you’re constantly running towards Sculptor’s Idols to recover resurrection charges, you’re performing a lot of killing blows that charge him up over time, or you’re just fantastic at playing Sekiro without completely dying, you’ll probably want to get rid of all that Essence of Rot and cure your NPC’s Dragonrot afflictions at some point.
Fortunately, there is a cure, but there is a catch, as you can only cure it a certain number of times, using a specific resource that is limited: drops of dragon blood.
How to cure dragon rot
Here is the step by step process to cure Dragonrot.
- Talk to the Sculptor and Emma after you are first teleported to the Dilapidated Temple, when you first obtain Rot Essence and learn about Dragonrot.
- Emma tells you she’ll look into it: you must leave and come back (rest on an idol or just come back when it’s convenient for you) to advance her progress.
- When you return, he will ask you for a blood sample from someone who has contracted the disease. Talk to another NPC who has it (remember that the Essence of Rot in your inventory will indicate who has caught it so far) and ask them to take a blood sample, then return to Emma and give her the sample.
- She will tell you to come back later and hopefully she will have more information – rest again or pay her another visit whenever you want, and she will give you the recovery amulet key item and a drop of dragon blood.
- Use the drop of dragon blood to heal all Dragonrot NPCs and remove all rotten essence from your inventory by visiting a Sculptor’s Idol and selecting the Dragonrot Restoration option.
- Each time you do this you consume that drop of dragon blood. They are quite rare (there are less than 20 in the game that we know of), so do this with caution. Don’t bother taking out Dragonrot right before entering a big boss fight where you expect to die ten times in a row anyway, for example!
We’ll go a little deeper into those specific locations for Dragon’s Blood Droplets over time, but for now that’s all the essentials covered to heal your lovely Dragonrot NPCs and get rid of the frustrating effects of Rot Essence. Just remember that when you come across a drop of dragon blood in your travels, it’s precious: use it wisely (but use it at some point; there’s no point in storing it for the end of the game).
