The new Pokémon Snap celebration is the latest Pokémon Go event.
The event, which arrives alongside the launch of the new Nintendo Switch game on April 30 (our New Pokémon Snap review explains how it captures the strange joy of the original game without being derivative), sees the arrival of a series of challenges and quests with Snapshot themes.
In addition to this, the event also sees the arrival of a new shiny, Smeargle, which will only be available for the duration of the event.

Below are all the challenges and rewards for the New Pokémon Snap Celebration research mission. This section contains spoilers, so if you want to be surprised, we recommend skipping it.
The New Pokémon Snap Celebration research quest is a timed research quest, meaning you must complete it before the event ends if you want to collect all the rewards.

New Pokémon Snap Celebration Mission, Step 1 of 4
- Take a snapshot of Metapod, Aipom or Lotad in the wild: 5 PokéBalls
- Use 3 Berries to Help Catch Pokémon: Bunnelby Encounter
- Take 3 Wild Pokémon Snapshots: Meowth Encounter
Rewards: 750 XP, 5 Nanab Berries, encounter with Dodrio

- Take a snapshot of Sandshrew, Trapinch or Cacnea in the wild – 10 PokéBalls
- Use 5 Berries to Help Catch Pokémon: Sandshrew Encounter

To clarify the above, you must take photographs of creatures. In nature, so when you find them and before you catch them, press the camera icon at the top of the screen. Additionally, for multiple steps of snapshot quests, such as types, you can simply take pictures of a single creature over and over again to complete them.
Field Research Tasks and everything you need to know about New Pokémon Snap Celebration in Pokémon Go
During the New Pokémon Snap Celebration in Pokémon Go, you’ll be able to collect a variety of exclusive Field Research Tasks by spinning PokéStops. These tasks can be kept and completed after the event ends, but you will only be able to find them during Sustainability Week.
Here are the New Pokémon Snap Celebration Field Research tasks and their rewards:
- Use 5 Berries to help capture the Pokémon reward: encounter with Croagunk, Stunfisk, Stunky, Wooper or Wurmple.
- Use 5 Golden Razz Berries to help capture the Pokémon reward: Alolan Vulpux or Lapras encounter
- Take a snapshot of a wild Pokémon reward: 3 Pineapple Berries or Raspberry Berries
- Take 5 Snapshots of the Wild Pokémon Reward: Dodrio, Skarmory, or Mantine Encounter

Aside from the research quest and tasks, a focal point of New Pokémon Snap Celebration is the release of the shiny Smeargle. This creature is only available through Photobombs; Take a snapshot of a creature from your collection and there is a chance that Smeargle will appear in the image. If so, they will appear in the wild so you can catch them.
As part of the event, Smeargle will appear up to 15 times per day. With the event lasting four days, that gives you 60 chances to get a shiny. It’s by no means guaranteed, but there’s still a chance. If you don’t get a shiny Smeargle, don’t worry – the opportunity will appear again in a future event.
Beyond this, the following Pokémon received improved appearances during the event:

Finally, as always, there will be a new range of Pokémon in raids, including the incarnate forms of Landorus, Thundurus and Tornadus in five-star raids.
The Season of Adventure Abundance is here! You can also work on the Timed Investigation: Master Ball mission and compete in Go Battle League. Be sure to compete in Shadow Raids, complete routes, use Daily Adventure Incense for a chance to encounter Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres. This incense can also give you encounters with other rare Pokémon in Pokémon Go.
New dates and times for celebrating Pokémon Snap in Pokémon Go
The New Pokémon Snap Celebration takes place around the launch weekend of New Pokémon Snap on Nintendo Switch, and as such only lasts four days in total.
As with previous events, the New Pokémon Snap Celebration Timed Research Mission and Field Research Missions are only available during these days, which run from Thursday, April 29 at 10 a.m. (local time) until on Sunday, May 2 at 8 pm (local time).
If you’re looking to complete the quest, expect your camera roll to fill up with snapshots, and dozens more if you’re looking for the elusive, shiny Smeragle.
