Pokémon Go’s Celebi is the second Mythical Pokémon in the game and was first made available in a way unlike any other creature we’ve seen so far.

However, there’s another key difference: the mission debuted first for attendees at this year’s Go Fest in Chicago.
Celebi has also released its shiny form in Pokémon Go. Shiny Celebi was first released during the December 2020 Secrets of the Jungle event, which unlocked the Distracted by Something Shiny special research quest.

How the Celebi ‘A Ripple in Time’ event works in Pokémon Go
Catching Celebi works very similarly to what Mew did in the first half of 2018, and will be available as part of a special research quest line called ‘A Ripple in Time’.
To begin, you must have completed the third set of Mew’s ‘A Mythical Discovery’ tasks. Like Mew, there is no time limit to complete the questline, so take your time!
Celebi also received its shiny form in Pokémon Go. How Celebi First Debuted in Pokémon Go
Before August, only attendees of this year’s Pokémon Go Fest in Chicago were available to catch Celebi.
Prior to the July event, data mining (via The Silph Road subreddit) had revealed a special research mission for attendees, which confirmed how the following happened:
- A total of five steps to complete.
- Challenges to hatch an egg, win Buddy Candy, and visit PokéStops
- Catching Unown, Plusle and Minun
- The text of the story hints at Celebi’s time travel abilities.
Once attendees registered for the event (players must spin a PokéStop and scan a barrack to register their account as an attendee) they were able to begin.
Another indication that Celebi would be at Go Fest is through a sponsored tweet from Mystic7, which shows a silhouette of the Pokémon in an invitation to the event:

Celebi is the second Mythical Pokémon in Pokémon Go and the final Pokédex entry in Gen 2. While Legendary Pokémon are powerful beasts that are captured in-game through specific steps, Mythical Pokémon can only be added to the game by acquiring them through of real-world giveaways. and later in the series, online events.
