Overwatch 2 release time, and when Overwatch 1 is shutting down

Overwatch 2’s release time comes the day after Overwatch 1 closes.

It’s rare to see the end of a game and its sequel begin in just over 24 hours, but Blizzard’s approach is designed to see its entire community move from one game to the next.

For Overwatch fans, it’s a bittersweet week, so here’s the closing time for Overwatch 1 so you can get in one last match, before playing the launch of Overwatch 2 shortly after.

Overwatch 2 Release Time: When is Overwatch 2 released?

Overwatch 2 will launch on Tuesday, October 4 at the following launch times on both PC and console:

  • UK: 8pm (BST)
  • Europe: 9:00 p.m. (CEST)
  • US East Coast: 3 pm (EDT)
  • US West Coast: 12:00 pm (PDT)

Blizzard says the times above are approximate. Being a live game, things may be delayed, so be prepared for times to slip a bit while the finishing touches are being put in place.

Overwatch 2 Release Times

While you wait, new players should create a Battle.net account, if you haven’t already, and set up two-factor authentication. This is a requirement on all platforms, including consoles.

If you are new, you should know that you must play 100 matches to unlock the entire roster. For returning players, the full roster will be available immediately. However, there is a new Battle Pass system to learn – here’s Bertie with everything you need to know.

New hero, Kiriko.

If you’re already an Overwatch player, you can start merging your progression from the original game into the sequel, even if you’re switching platforms. Here is the official blog post on how it works.

You can also start preloading in advance so you can start playing as soon as the servers are up…

Overwatch 2 times and preload size

Before the release of Overwatch 2, you can start preloading the game, which means you can start working once the release time arrives.

Pre-loading on PC is now available, while on consoles it will be available at the following times on Tuesday, October 4 in the hours prior to launch:

  • UK: 5pm (BST)
  • Europe: 6:00 p.m. (CEST)
  • US East Coast: 12 pm (EDT)
  • US West Coast: 9am (PDT)

Meanwhile, the download size will be around 50GB on PC and around 30GB on console.

Overwatch 1 Server Shutdown Time: When Will Overwatch 1 Shut Down?

UPDATE (October 4, 9am): As planned and on cue, Blizzard shut down the Overwatch 1 servers. When you try to log in, you’ll receive a message that Overwatch 2 is on the way. You can see the moment Overwatch was shut down for good below, as Matt Wales reported last night, as well as the many ways players said goodbye in their own ways.

ORIGINAL REPORT: Unlike previous Activision Blizzard games, such as Destiny, Call of Duty or Diablo, the servers for the original Overwatch will be shut down on Monday, October 3 before the free sequel.

However, the downtime between games is fairly short, so you won’t have to wait too long. If you want to participate in a final match, the Overwatch 1 server shutdown times are as follows:

  • UK: 5pm (BST)
  • Europe: 6:00 p.m. (CEST)
  • US East Coast: 12 pm (EDT)
  • US West Coast: 9am (PDT)

Blizzard says the times above are approximate, so you may be able to do one or two more sessions after the above. Either way, it’s worth enjoying the last bit of gaming time now.

Know that as the owner of the original Overwatch, you will receive the Founder’s Pack, which will unlock the new hero Kiriko and have access to all the other heroes automatically.
