The Festival of Lights has returned to Pokémon Go!
This year’s event sees the release of Morelull and Shiinotic in Pokémon Go, along with a Festival of Lights timed research mission that you can complete to earn the Sparkler Pose.
There’s also a collection of field research tasks exclusive to the event, and if you play Pokémon Go at night, you may notice that certain Pokémon glow brighter in the dark.

Steps of the ‘Festival of Lights’ mission in Pokémon Go
Festival of Lights is a timed research quest that is only available in Pokémon Go until Monday, October 17 at 8 pm (local time). If you want to get the flare pose, you must complete this research mission before the deadline.
Below you will find all the quest steps and rewards for the Festival of Light. Just beware of spoilers!

‘Festival of Lights’ Step 1 of 2
- Catch 25 Pokémon – 25 Poké Balls
- Hatch 2 eggs – Meeting with Morelull
- Make 15 good pitches and 20 great balls.
- Make 10 big throws: 10 Ultra Balls
- Make 5 Curveball Throws: 10 Pineapple Berries
- Use 10 Berries to help catch Pokémon – Dedenne
Rewards: 2500 XP and encounter with Ponyta de Galar
‘Festival of Lights’ Step 1 of 2
- Catch 25 Pokémon – 25 Poké Balls
- Walk 5 km – 3 golden pineapple berries
- Evolve 3 Pokémon – Chinchou
- Make 10 big throws – 20 big balls
- Spin 25 PokéStops or Gyms: 3 Silver Pineapple Berries
- Take snapshots of 10 different wild Pokémon – Litwick
Rewards: 2500 XP and flare pose
Festival of Lights Field Research Tasks in Pokémon Go
By spinning PokéStops during this year’s Festival of Lights in Pokémon Go, you’ll be able to collect field research tasks exclusive to the event. These tasks will be saved in your Field Research Collection to complete whenever you want, as long as you don’t delete them!
These are the field research tasks for the Festival of Lights:
- Reward for catching 5 Pokémon: encounter with Chinchou
- Reward for capturing 10 Pokémon: Blitzle encounter
- Reward for capturing 15 Pokémon: encounter with Morelull
- Reward for hatching an egg: encounter with Ponyta de Galar
- Power up Pokémon 5x the reward: Dedenne encounter
- Send 5 gifts and add a sticker to each reward: encounter with Magmar or Electabuzz

The Season of Adventure Abundance is here! The Psychic Spectular event is back! You can also work on the Timed Investigation: Master Ball mission and compete in Go Battle League. Be sure to compete in Shadow Raids, complete routes, use Daily Adventure Incense for a chance to encounter Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres. This incense can also give you encounters with other rare Pokémon in Pokémon Go.

This year’s Festival of Lights sees the release of Morelull and Shiinotic in Pokémon Go. These two Pokémon come from Generation 7, and if you want to learn more about these magic mushrooms, visit our page on how to evolve Morelull into Shiinotic.

There are also four bonuses that run during the Festival of Lights, such as Chinchou having an increased glow rate throughout the event. However, be sure to catch a wide variety of Pokémon during this event, because you’ll receive double catch candy and double catch experience for each one! To help you in this task, Incense will last for two hours during the Festival of Lights.
Certain Pokémon will also appear more frequently when you use Incense:
- Alolan Geodude
- Galarian Ponyta

- Darumaka
- Darumaka of Galar

- Dedenne
- Morelull
Aside from Incense, you’ll encounter the following Pokémon in the wild most often during the Festival of Lights:

- Togedemaru
Finally, you’ll be able to fight Galarian Ponyta, Darumaka, Dedenne, and Morelull in one-star raids. Alolan Raichu, Galarian Weezing, Mawile, and, making its first appearance since raid day, Hisuian Braviary in three-star raids. The five-star legendary raid is Xerneas, while, in Mega Raids, you will find Mega Manectric.
