Monster Hunter World – How to capture monsters large and small

Learning how to capture monsters in Monster Hunter World allows you to complete quests without cutting your prey into pieces.

With the right timing and use of items, you can choose to capture live monsters to gain additional materials and resources that you wouldn’t get by simply taking them down the old fashioned way. It also unlocks that monster to fight in the game’s Arena.

Capturing is an optional way to complete any regular hunting mission, but it is a requirement for certain types of optional hunts, so learning how to do it will be key if you want to complete every mission on the list.

There is also the option to capture smaller creatures, which is useful for obtaining items and completing other types of optional quests.

Elsewhere, our Monster Hunter World tips can help you decide when to farm, what to search for, and what to do between hunts, and our Monster Hunter World walkthrough and guide can help you with main quest and story progress.

How to catch large monsters in Monster Hunter World

To capture a monster, you need a trap and some tranquilizers. These come in many different forms (such as tranquilizer ammo), but let’s focus on the main two: a shock trap and a tranquilizer bomb.

If you are conducting research specifically to catch a creature, it will be in the item box ready and waiting when you appear in the area.

Otherwise, it is worth having stock available in Expeditions. Both types of items can also be purchased from the supply pool or crafted; For example, shock traps require a trap tool and a Thunderbug, while tranquilizer bombs require sleeping herbs and parashrooms.

Once you have what you need and have found your monster, follow it and attack it as usual until it is wounded. This can be visibly seen by the way it limps when moving, usually back to its nest. At this point he is vulnerable enough to capture.

Follow him and place a trap on the ground by checking your inventory with L1/Left Bumper to rotate the menu at the bottom right and then using the item. You will want to place it in his path or at his feet when he is sleeping.

If you are seen on approach, then a Ghillie Mantle could help you.

When he’s shocked, it’s time to use Tranq Bombs. Again, scroll through your inventory and use it next to the beast (it will scatter around you). After a handful of these, the creature will fall asleep and be captured, ending the hunt. Well done!

In addition to a set of bumper materials, you can also see your catch in the northwest of Astera, with a nap in the corner. Also unlocks that monster to fight in the game’s Arena (available as an optional mission).

Another thing to note: if you’re targeting certain materials from particular body parts (legs, head, tail), these can still drop mid-battle as usual before you capture them, so feel free to target select parts like usual.

Additionally, a subset of creatures (elder dragons like Kirin) cannot be captured and must therefore be killed.

Although they live to fight another day, any appendages you cut off will not survive. Sorry for the queue, Pukei-Pukei.

How to capture small creatures with Capture Net in Monster Hunter World and set them as your pet

In addition to the main objectives of a hunt, you can also capture small creatures that you find scampering or fluttering in the wild.

Let’s use an early game critical reward, Research Aid: Woodland Pteryx Capture as an example. You’ll start by talking to the Endemic Life Researcher in the fifth Ancient Forest area (northeast corner of the map) while in Expedition mode.

To capture this or any small creature (think frogs, insects, and anything else that slinks or flutters), you must first equip your capture net.

To do this, press L1/Left Bumper and rotate through your inventory at the bottom right, then press Square (or the X button on Xbox). Keep in mind that Capture Net will always be with you; You don’t have to worry about leaving her behind on missions.

Now use the left and right triggers to aim and then shoot the net. The range is not very great, so you should get reasonably close; If the retractable lights orange, then the target is in range.

As for that Woodland Pteryx? It’s high in the trees in area 15, which is above area 5 of the Ancient Forest. You will see them gliding between the trees; Just wait until he rests to catch him. Then remember to deliver the reward to Astera to earn your rewards.

It’s worth noting that any small creatures you catch can become your pets. Head to your room in Astera, then talk to your housekeeper to show her a list of your catches, then release the one you’ve chosen.

They do nothing more than offer a point of decoration. That said, there are plenty of regular creatures to choose from to spruce up your abode, so keep an eye out for what you can find!
