High rank in Monster Hunter Rise is where the fun really begins.
As with previous Monster Hunter games, monsters and their associated hunts are divided into two categories: low rank and high rank. The latter gives you tougher monsters and higher-level gear to farm as rewards, and your current high rank (or HR, as the community often calls it) represents your progression until the end of the game.
Following the April 2021 ‘2.0’ update, the previous high rank cap was unlocked, allowing players to accumulate Hunter Rank points.

How to unlock high rank in Monster Hunter Rise
When you play Monster Hunter Rise for the first time, you are in the low range. This is not mentioned as such, but you should know that all the starting quests in the Village and Hub quest paths are in this range.
High Rank is only available in Hub missions and is unlocked once you complete four-star missions.
However, it is not the only way to unlock High Rank; We recommend playing the Village quests, as as you reach higher stages you will unlock licenses that will allow you to jump up the Center quest chain, helping you reach high rank without having to start from scratch.
These licenses are quite challenging – they task you with hunting multiple creatures at once – but they mean you can progress the Village story and access the juicy end-game content in the Hub at the same time.
If you’d rather just go with the Hub, you should know that the Village quests are particularly useful for beginners and solo players, as they are designed to be easier to complete than the Hub quests, which focus particularly on the endgame and multiplayer mode.
What is the current high rank cap in Monster Hunter Rise and how do Hunter Rank Points work?
At launch, Monster Hunter Rise had a high rank cap of 7, also known as HR7.
Following the April 2021 2.0 update, this raised the cap to HR 999, as with previous Monster Hunter games.
The update also made players automatically start at HR8 once they reached the end of the game. From there, you can progress through the ranks by earning Hunter Rank points.
This is a progression system that you can earn by playing virtually any mission. Reports surrounding the update’s release suggest that the new missions can unlock between 1 and 2 ranks per hunt.
If you had played the endgame before the update, you should know that these Hunter Rank points were not “stacking” by the arrival of the update, as they were when players reached high rank in Monster Hunter World, meaning that everyone will start at HR8, and have to work their way up.
The HR cap being unlocked also introduced the following, copied verbatim from the official patch notes:
- New monsters will appear in the Village and Hub missions.
- New monsters will appear in Rampage.
- New quests, Arena quests and requests will be available.
- New weapon, armor, item and petal trees will be available.
- New skills and rampage abilities will be available.
- Armor upgrade level cap will be increased.
- New decorations will be available to forge in Smithy.
- Layered armor will be available to forge at the blacksmith.
- Palico and Palamute layered armor will be available to forge at Buddy Smithy.
- The Palico and Palamute level cap will be raised to level 50.
- The default level for Palico and Palamute hired from the Buddy Scout will be increased.

How can you prepare for the Monster Hunter Rise endgame before the April update?
The following section comes from an older version of the page and discusses how to approach the endgame before the April update. We will keep this section as the points discussed can still be useful as general pointers for the end of the game.
