How to evolve Scyther into Scizor in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, including Mirror Coat location

You can evolve Scyther to Scyzor and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, adding this fan-favorite Bug/Steel Pokémon to your Pokédex.

Trade-based evolution is one of several special evolution methods found in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet; This one dates back to the early days of the franchise and was one of the first commercial evolutions that required the Pokémon to have a specific element.

Here’s where to find a Scyther, if you haven’t caught one yet, and then how to turn it into a Scyzor in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

Where to find Scyther in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Scyther is fairly easy to find in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: it has the ideal combination of being relatively common and large enough to be easy to spot.

If you focus your search in the northwest of the map, you will quickly see the Mantis Pokémon in the bamboo forests of Paldea and near the water.

If you’re having trouble finding Scyther, head to the following locations:

If you want to speed up the process, be sure to eat a sandwich that increases your Bug or Flying type encounter rate, but this shouldn’t be necessary.

How to evolve Scyther into Scizor and in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

The evolution from Scyther to Scizor is where things get a little complicated, because you have to trade Scyther with a friend while holding a Metal Coat. Unless it’s a mirror exchange, you’ll obviously want it back immediately afterwards.

How to get a mirror cape in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

There is only one store that sells Metal Coat, and that is Delibird Presents in Levincia. Look in the Battle Items section and you’ll find the familiar icon at the top of the list.

Alternatively, you could wait for the Porto Marinada auction house to publish it, but that’s the crazy thing…

Our The Teal Mask walkthrough will help you complete the first part of The Hidden Treasure of Area Zero DLC, but make sure you know how to start it first. When visiting Kitakami it is a good idea to know how to get Sinistea, Dipplin and The Loyal Three. Our Pokémon Scarlet and Violet walkthrough can take you through the main campaign, including The First Day of School, Victory Road, Starfall Street, Path of Legends, and, when you’re ready, The Way Home and the final boss. Elsewhere, we can help with the normal gym test secret item menu, version differences, the best scarlet and violet starter, XP farming, shiny Pokémon, and learning to fly, swim, climb, and run. When it comes to individual Pokémon, we can help with Gimmighoul, Ditto, Bellibolt, Pawmot, Scovillain, Frigibax, Brambleghast, Annihilape, Farigiraf, Dudunsparce, Lycanrock, Armarouge, and Ceruledge.
