Fort Zancudo is a military base in GTA 5 located off the Great Ocean Highway, just south of Paleto Bay.
Here you can steal some awesome military vehicles and helicopters, including the cargobob from the Merryweather Heist.
You don’t need to be playing a story mission to visit here, however, as it’s ready and waiting for you – as long as you know the entrance to the military base, of course.
This page will explain how to raise the Rhino Tank, Fighter Jet, Attack Chopper, and Titan.
There are no GTA 5 cheats or mods here, although if you’re feeling impatient, you should know that they are an option.

GTA 5 Military Base Location and Entrances Explained
The military base location in GTA 5 is located off the Great Ocean Highway south of Paleto Bay.

Once you have arrived at the military base, there are several entrances:
- Through the Great Ocean Highway west entrance which is the main entrance.

- Through the east entrance on Route 68.

- Jump the fence along the Great Ocean Highway with a fast car.
Arriving by plane (by car) is an exciting and surprisingly practical way to steal vehicles from the military base.
Finally, although it’s not technically an entry, he parachutes out of a helicopter.

How to enter and prepare for the GTA 5 military base
The following sections can guide you toward specific vehicles you want to steal, but it’s worth familiarizing yourself and preparing for the military base in general:
- Trevor is the go-to person to steal any vehicle on base. His Red Mist ability comes in handy when about twenty soldiers shoot at him. He can also resist tank attacks.
- Franklin is also a good choice due to his deceleration ability. This can be useful when avoiding approaching vehicles and tanks.
- It is a good idea to purchase heavy armor or super heavy armor before entering the base.
- Using a fast car to enter the base will buy you a few seconds before the forces arrive. Be sure not to use a convertible or a motorcycle; It will make you an easy target.
- Once you enter the base, you will automatically receive 4 stars. This means you have 10-15 seconds to reach the vehicle you need before you are surrounded by military soldiers, 2 helicopters, and 3-4 tanks.
- The military base has an interior and exterior service road located at both entrances. Using these service roads can save you some time, as tanks and trucks cannot enter and soldiers will not follow you on these roads.
The inner and outer service roads can help you buy some time to explore the base.
- If you enter through the main west entrance, the main hangars will be on your right. The tanks will always come down the path to your left. If you enter through the Route 68 entrance, the main hangars will be on your left. The easiest way to get to the hangars is via the interior service road on the left.

- You will land on the main runway if you choose to jump over the fence that crosses the road. On the left side is a large hangar, and in front of it you’ll usually find a Buzzard Attack Helicopter and a Fighter Jet, or two of each.
- There’s a lot of open space once you clear the hangars. You can use this space to attract trucks, tanks, and soldiers.
How to get the Rhino Tank from the military base in GTA 5
This might be the hardest vehicle to steal from the military base in GTA 5, but there are a few ways to get the tank.
Direct approach
The direct approach means entering the base with Trevor and using his invincible ability to dodge gunfire from the tank and soldiers.
To do so, enter through the Great Ocean Highway entrance and stay to the left; You’ll find some patrol tanks on your way. Or, if they don’t show up, you’ll have to go around and look for them.
Dodge the tank’s fire (you can hear a beep when the tank locks on), get out of your car, and activate Trevor’s ability. While tank fire can’t kill you, it can knock you down, so be careful.
The entrance to the tank is on the front left side, so enter it as quickly as you can. Once inside, exit the base and escape. The shots will not damage the tank, but you must get out of there before the other tanks arrive.
Aggressive approach
The aggressive approach is a little less direct and requires a little patience. You will not need to enter the base.
Approach the Great Ocean Highway entrance and turn immediately left toward the mountains. Drive along the dirt road until you see a small cliff overlooking the fort and head up the mountain. Once you have a good vantage point, look for a tank and, using your sniper rifle, shoot it.
This will alert the base and tanks and vehicles will head in your direction. At this point, you’ll gain 2 stars, so you’ll have to keep shooting at the vehicles to make sure they get close to you.
One or more Rhino tanks may come your way, but they tend to get stuck along the way. Keep shooting them and they will eventually reach the road directly below you.
Here you can choose how you want to approach the tank. Usually the driver will get out of the tank and look for you. You can shoot it and the tank will be left without a driver. You can use Trevor’s special ability to protect yourself as you approach the tank and take control.
When trying to steal a Rhino Tank, there are three important things to keep in mind:
- Never lose sight of the tank when using the aggressive approach. Sometimes tanks can disappear and you will have to start over.
- There won’t always be tanks patrolling the base, so sometimes you’ll have to shoot at soldiers or trucks to sound the alarm.
- Once you steal the tank, you know where to go as you will earn 4 or 5 stars almost immediately. Since there will be helicopters flying overhead, look for a good tunnel.
How to get the P-996 LAZER from the military base in GTA 5
Stealing the fighter jet from the military base is a little easier than stealing the Rhino in GTA 5. Unfortunately, there is only one effective way to get this fighter jet, and that is to drive to it and fly.
Start by entering the base through the Great Ocean Highway entrance or jumping over the fence using a fast car.
The fighter plane is located at different points in the base. Sometimes it will be in the large hangars, and other times it will be parked along the runway. You’ll also find it parked right outside the hangars. Make sure you have the appropriate car in case you need to search for the plane.
Once you have control of the fighter jet, it is important that you take off from the runway and stay as low as possible. If you fly high, the missiles will target you quite quickly. You’ll have some luck if you turn the camera behind you as you take off. In some cases, the missiles will not shoot at you.
Take your new fighter jet to your hangar and it will be yours.
How to get the Buzzard Attack Chopper from the military base in GTA 5
The method to steal the Buzzard Attack Chopper from the military base in GTA 5 is similar to acquiring the fighter jet.
The best way to get to the Buzzard is to jump over the fence with a fast car. Typically, two helicopters (or a helicopter and a jet) will appear right in front of the hangars on the left side of the runway. If there is no helicopter there, you will have to head to the other hangars.
Once you’re on the Buzzard, fly as fast as you can and look behind you, which tends to make it harder for the missiles to target you. You will have to fly with a considerable gap before you can look ahead. You want to make sure you are as far away from the base as possible.
Be careful of the police helicopters, as they will follow you. You can use your heat-seeking missiles to shoot down the helicopters.
You can take your new helicopter to Sandy Shores Airfield or any hangar for safekeeping.

How to get the Titan from the military base in GTA 5
Stealing the Titan from the military base in GTA 5 is a bit complicated, because these huge helicopters are in the middle of the base, in front of the main hangars. The Titan will not appear anywhere else.
First entering Fort Zancudo through the Great Ocean Highway entrance or jumping over the fence. Next, locate the Titan and approach one as quickly as possible.
If you are using Trevor, activate his special ability while trying to get into the helicopter.
