The Gears 5 tech test lets you pick up the sequel to the Xbox shooter this summer, ahead of its September release date on Xbox One and PC.
In the meantime, there are multiple editions of Gears 5, multiple ways to get early access to Gears 5, and the chance to get a Gears 5 Terminator Dark Fate pre-order pack if you play the game early enough at release.
Gears 5 Tech Test Release Date and Access Explained
Microsoft has announced that Gear 5 Tech Test will be available for pre-download on July 17 at the following times:
- 6:00 pm (Pacific Time)
- 19:00 (Central European Time)
- 13:00 (EDT)
- 10am (PDT)
The technical test will be approximately 15 GB.
There will be two technical tests in total. The first runs from Friday, July 19 to Monday, July 22. The second will take place from Friday, July 26 to Monday, July 29.
Both technical tests will begin and end at the following times:
- 6:00 pm (Pacific Time)
- 19:00 (Central European Time)
- 13:00 (EDT)
- 10am (PDT)
The technical test focuses on Versus mode, with two new multiplayer maps and three modes for you to experience. You can play King of the Hill, Arcade, “a fast-paced experience built for extreme fun,” as well as Escalation 2.0, the “next evolution of our esports mode,” according to Microsoft.
There will also be two new features for you to play. The first is Bootcamp, which is a training mode to learn new mechanics. The second is Tour of Duty, where you can complete medals to unlock exclusive Tester weapon skins for Gears 5. Completing all three medals will unlock the exclusive Tester Banner.
Gears 5 Tech Test will be available on both Xbox One and PC. To get access to the Gears 5 tech test, you must:
- Have an Xbox Game Pass subscription
- Pre-order Gears 5 at participating retailers
How to Get the Gears 5 Terminator Dark Fate Pre-Order Pack
As an incentive to get the game early, Gears 5 is offering a Terminator Dark Fate pre-order package.
To access the bundle, pre-order any digital edition of Gears 5 or play using an active Xbox Game Pass membership within the first week of release (in other words, before September 16) to get your hands on some Terminator skins.
Specifically, the Terminator Dark Fate pack includes:

- T-800 Skin
- Vector Lancer Skin
- 7 days boost
By the way, character packs and skins require Xbox Live Gold if you play on Xbox Live Gold.
