Fortnite Playground release date – when it will return and how the LTM mode works

Fortnite Playground LTM is the game’s attempt to create a sandbox mode, allowing players to explore the map more freely, without the threat of other players.

After being teased in May, the mode arrived in June before being pulled after a false start. Now it’s back, and this is how the mode works.

What is the Fortnite Playground LTM mode and what’s new?

As described by Epic Games, this is the work of the Playground LTM:

“Fight and build to your heart’s content with an extended amount of time to traverse the map as well as increased resource generation. All treasure chests and ammo boxes will spawn, try placing them in different locations and examine the loot. Friendly Fire “It’s activated so you can play with your squad (up to 4 friends per match), but don’t fear, you’ll respawn immediately. Oh… and lots of flames.”

According to the official patch notes, this includes:

  • You will load the map with only you and up to three of your friends (in a squad)
  • You can explore and loot anything freely without other players approaching.
  • All treasure chests and ammo boxes will spawn, meaning loot will be easy to find and will allow you to “learn” map spawn locations in a safe environment.
  • A 10x resource collection rate means you can build structures more easily and allows you to practice without the worry of other players.
  • 100 llamas appear on the map.
  • Friendly fire and instant respawns (unless killed by the storm) mean that you and your friends can play against each other, either for fun or for practice, at any of the locations on the map.
  • Sessions last up to an hour, with the storm approaching the 55th minute and taking five minutes to close.

As a fun sandbox mode and as a tool to learn the map and practice building and combat, Playground LTM could be incredibly useful for players of all abilities.

Another important point is statistics and challenges will not be tracked in this mode, meaning it will not be possible to open chests in named areas or mark Gnome or Pitches.

What’s new in Playground LTM?

Returning for the first time in Season 5, Playground LTM has undergone a number of changes. The following comes directly from Epic Games:

  • Players can now change teams in-game. Join the same team to work together creatively, join separate teams to practice fighting against each other!
  • Note: Voice chat will remain enabled on all devices; Future versions of the mode will offer more customization.
  • Aim assist will work when using a gamepad against players on the opposing team.
  • Matches will no longer end if a player leaves the server.
  • Golf carts were added and appear 100% of the time.
  • Ammo cans generate 10 times the amount of ammo.
  • Removed gray vending machines and increased the chance of higher level machines appearing.
  • Greater probability of generating launch and bounce platforms.
  • The glider’s forced deployment height has been reduced, so players can get back into the action more quickly.
  • Increased maximum rocket ammo limit to 60.
  • Increased rocket ammo drop rates.
  • Added 100 supply drops.
  • Chests now spawn 3 weapons and more ammo and consumables than normal.
  • Floor loot now spawns 3 items.
  • Increased Chug Jug and Slurp Juice spawn chances, decreased bandages.
  • Added Chug Jugs to floor loot.
  • Respawn timer reduced from 10 seconds to 3 seconds.

When is the Fortnite Playground LTM release date?

Fortnite Playground’s release date is Wednesday, July 25, nearly a month after its original debut on June 26, before quickly being taken offline after a series of technical issues (and then returning on July 2).

It will likely be online at the following times, based on previous updates:

  • UK: 9am (BST)
  • Europe: 10:00 a.m. (CEST)
  • US East Coast: 4 am (EDT)
  • US West Coast: 1 am (PDT)

As it is an LTM, or ‘Limited Time Mode’, it won’t be available forever. Epic hasn’t said when it will go offline, but our best guess will be the next patch, scheduled for Tuesday, July 31.

You also have until the previous date and time to access the mode’s replay data.
