The length of Dying Light 2 has been a point of contention in the weeks leading up to the game’s release, and developer Techland has hundreds of hours of content available.
Although they later clarified what they meant if you didn’t see and do everything, we wanted to give you our experience on how long it takes to beat Dying Light 2, if you were interested in what the critical path has in store for you.

Dying Light 2 Duration: How long does it take to beat Dying Light 2?
Developer Techland has said in the lead-up to release that it will take 500 hours to “complete” the game, which means “maximizing the game” by finishing all missions, endings, and “exploring every part of the world.”
He later clarified that it would take around 80 hours to complete the main story and side quests, and for those looking to just do the main story, that will be closer to 20 hours, much more manageable numbers than the initial 500.
So, having played the game ourselves, how accurate are those estimates? One person spent 25 hours on the main story, and another spent around 30 to 35 hours adding some side content. In terms of branching paths, which the previous hour count was suggested to contribute to, we found that it seems to funnel it into the story. ending, so any choices you make shouldn’t affect the length of the story.
Know that if you’re done with everything Dying Light 2 has to offer at launch, Techland has said it’s planning for at least five years of post-launch DLC.

When does Dying Light 2 open world start?
Dying Light 2 has a long prologue section before reaching the game’s open-world city.
During this introduction, you’ll learn about our hero Aiden, his backstory, and features like parkour exploration, first-person combat, and how the day-night cycle affects enemies.
In total, the prologue lasts about two hours, and you can watch your way to the city in the hour-long video above of the game’s opening. Beyond where that ends, there will be two additional missions (Getting Stronger and Markers of the Plague) in which (light spoilers ahead) you’ll search the city for a biomarker to help you integrate into post-apocalyptic society.
Once this is done, you will be free to explore the first areas of the city, start side quests, and unlock Windmill locations.
If you were hoping to use fast travel, expect to spend more time on the story first.
Ultimately, if you’re not ready to hit 500 hours, as mentioned above, there’s still plenty to see and do, so good luck with what you choose to see and do first!
