Control – What a Mess: Burn the Trash and What a Mess: Clear the Clog side missions

What a Mess: Burn the Garbage and What a Mess: Clear the Clog are the first side quests that Ahti, the janitor, will give you in Control.

Ahti thinks you’re his new assistant and clearly isn’t going to listen to any arguments to the contrary. He also has a vacation coming up, so you might as well help him.

Completing these missions will reward you with more materials, new modifications (both weapon and personal), and more skill points to enhance Jesse’s powers. So head to the Maintenance Sector and see what Ahti has in store for you.

How to start What a Mess missions in Control

What a Mess missions begin by selecting them on the bulletin board in the janitor’s office.

You will find new quests from Ahti on the notice board in the janitor’s office.

The quickest way to get to the janitor’s office is to fast travel through the checkpoints to the NSC power plant.

From there, head through the double doors in front of the power plant and take the elevator to reach the janitor’s office. You’ll find Ahti and the bulletin board inside.

What a disaster: burning garbage under control

Your first job as an assistant janitor is simple: burn trash. To do this, you must head to the Furnace Chamber.

How to get to the oven chamber

If you plan to complete this side quest during the main quest, Director Override, you will visit the furnace on the way to the NSC coolant pumps.

After clearing the checkpoint on the way to the coolant pumps, you can go through the hallway on the right to find the furnace.

If you are completing What A Mess: Burn the Trash, you can simply fast travel to the NSC coolant pumps entrance and head to the furnace chamber.

Burn the garbage around the oven.

Around the furnace chamber, you will find barrels with a biohazard sign that you don’t care about. This is the trash Ahti wants you to get rid of.

Use your Throwing powers to pick up the trash and throw it into the Oven.

There are 6 barrels you can burn in total and they can be found:

  • Right in front of you as you enter the Furnace Chamber
  • To the left of the oven
  • In the lower left corner of the room.
  • On the ledge on the right side of the room; you can reach it through the hallways.
  • On the bottom floor of the room, hidden behind some pipes, look for the green glow.
  • On the lower floor of the room behind a pillar.

Throwing all the barrels into the furnace will complete the mission.

What a disaster – remove the blockage under control

The blockage has returned and Ahti needs your help to get it out of the pumping station.

How to get to the pumping station

The quickest way to get to the pumping station is to fast travel to the NSC coolant pumps entrance through the checkpoints.

Then you’ll want to head over to the actual NSC coolant pumps. Don’t forget to keep your guard up as you explore this room, because Hiss’s forces may appear to attack you.

Use the hallways to reach the highest level of the coolant pump room. At the end of this level, you will find the doors to the pump room.

Listen to the sounds of Ahti music if you have trouble finding the door.

Go through these doors to reach the pump station.

Clear the obstruction

Upon entering the pump station, you will be able to see the clog through the floor grate. You will find two electrical outlets, but no electrical boxes. Don’t worry about these empty sockets for now.

Instead, use the cabinet on the right side of the room to climb onto the cage containing pipes. This will allow you to avoid one of the closed doors and descend to the room below.

Go up to this cabinet.

Here you will find both a power outlet and an electrical box. Use your Throwing powers to place the box on the socket to open the door.

Place the electrical box into the socket on the right.

Behind the doors you will find another electricity box. Pick it up with your throwing powers and return to the main section of the Pump Room. Place the electrical box into any of the outlets in this room.

Now climb back up the pipe cage and retrieve the first electricity box with your Throw powers. Place it into the remaining empty socket.

Activate the drain pump.

Climb the stairs on the upper level of the pump station and turn the pipe gear to activate the drain pump.

Turn the valve on the pipe.

Go to the lower level and push the clog back.

It’s time to face the Clog.

Head through the door on the highest level of the pump station to reach the lower level where the obstruction resides.

Once you’re deep in the pumping station, it’s time to take out the clog.

As before, you eliminate the clog by destroying its yellow, blob-like ends with your service weapon.

Destroying the Clog (for now…) will complete the quest, before you leave, make sure to open the two chests on the lowest level of the Pumping Station.
