Black Ops 4 Create a Class is a core Call of Duty feature, allowing you to create custom loadout for use in multiplayer matches.
However, it is locked when you first start the game and takes a bit of time and effort to access it.
How to Unlock Create a Class in Black Ops 4
Creating a class appears prominently in the multiplayer menu when you first load the game, but it’s locked. Hovering over it doesn’t reveal any more information, so it’s initially a mystery how to access it.
Simply put, you must play multiplayer matches with the game’s pre-established character classes and level up until you reach rank five.
Starting at level five, Create a Class will be unlocked, allowing you to create custom loadout. To be clear, you must play multiplayer matches; Progression is tied to each specific mode, so reaching Echelon level five in Blackout doesn’t unlock anything in multiplayer, for example.
Even if you’re struggling to get wins in multiplayer, you’ll earn XP simply for completing matches, eventually reaching fifth place.

If for some reason you reach rank five and No unlocking, then restarting the game might be the solution (thanks to reddit for the tip).
We don’t know why the game doesn’t clearly outline the Create a Class unlock requirement from the beginning, but there’s the answer: play enough games and it’s yours.
Until then, it’s probably a good opportunity to try out the different character classes available and get an idea of what kind of abilities you want to try out before creating your own custom build.
