Animal Crossing Flowers: Hybrids, crossbreeding and colour combinations in New Horizons explained

Flowers are a great way to add a pop of color to your island in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

There are a variety of flower types and colors to choose from. However, if you’re feeling creative, you can create a variety of hybrid flowers through cross-pollination.

Just make sure you have your watering can handy!

Flowers and flower breeds in Animal Crossing: New Horizons explained

Planting flowers in New Horizons allows you to add a nice pop of color to your island when you first arrive. Later, when you start climbing cliffs thanks to the ladder, you will discover that a specific type of wildflower will grow on your island.

This wildflower will be one of the eight varieties of flowers present in New Horizons, which are:

  • Cosmos
  • hyacinths
  • lilies
  • moms
  • thoughts
  • tulips
  • roses
  • wind flowers

Growing flowers will help convert your island and increase your island’s star level; just make sure not to go through them or you will destroy the petals.

Don’t run through your flowers!

Where to find flower seeds in Animal Crossing: New Horizons explained

When you first start playing New Horizons, you can buy flower seeds from Timmy at Residential Services.

However, once you have opened Nook’s Cranny, you will be able to purchase flower seeds by interacting with the cabinet inside the store.

Here you can find at least six different types of flowers every day. These flowers will vary in both breed and color, from red tulips to yellow pansies.

A single package of flowers will cost you 240 bells, but if you decide to buy a batch of five, it will cost you 1,200 bells.

How to grow flowers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons explained

Once you’ve purchased your flower seeds in New Horizons, it’s time to plant them and start building your own little garden.

Planting flowers in New Horizons is simple: open your inventory, select the bag of seeds you want to plant, and then select the “Plant” option.

Just make sure you are standing on or near the spot of soil where you want to grow the flowers.

Now you need to water your flowers until they bloom and for this you need a watering can. With that in hand, be sure to water your flower, unless it’s raining, of course.

It will take approximately three to five flowers to grow.

Once your flowers have bloomed, you can use them to attract a variety of insects, sell them, harvest them to use in DIY recipes, or simply use them as decoration.

If you decide to pick the flowers, the plant will remain. If you water this plant, in a couple of days the flowers will bloom again. However, the flower will not grow if you do not water it.

Replanting flowers in Animal Crossing: New Horizons explained

If you don’t like where a flower was placed in New Horizons, then all you have to do is grab your trusty shovel and dig it up. You can move any flower at any point in its growth cycle.

You’ll find the flower in your inventory once you’ve dug it up, and from there you can sell it, save it, or replant it elsewhere.

Unlike moving trees, you don’t need to consume any fruit or a coconut to do it.

Flower crossing in Animal Crossing: New Horizons explained

If you want flowers that are a little more exciting than those sold at Nook’s Cranny in New Horizons, then experimenting with crossbreeding is the way to go.

Before starting your experiments, you must first buy flowers from your parents. These are the flowers you will use to see your hybrid flowers and you will need them to be the same breed as the flowers you want to grow.

Take a look at the section below to see what colors are available through breeding and what flower colors you need to create them.

Crossbreeding works on a 5×5 grid, with each flower, or empty space for a flower, occupying a square on this grid.

.

Let your flowers grow, making sure to water them every day, and eventually the hybrid flowers will be planted in the empty spaces you’ve left. Once they are fully grown, you can dig them up with your shovel and replant them elsewhere on your island.

In the image above, we are growing white pansies with the goal of crossing blue pansies.

With this structure, you can grow any hybrid flower you want.

It is a good idea to place your cross garden somewhere out of the way on your island. Not only will this ensure that you have enough space to grow your flowers, but it will also prevent you from accidentally walking through them or having to build a building on top of them.

Fences can also be used to separate flower patches, so you can have several flower patches next to each other and avoid accidental crossings.
