Crossplay in Back 4 Blood allows you to invite friends and create multiplayer games between different platforms.
Cross-play is automatically enabled in the cooperative zombie shooter, which is welcome as it is better enjoyed in the company of humans than in the company of robots.
Not only does this allow split-second decisions to be made seamlessly, especially if you’re on voice chat, but it also makes the experience more entertaining.

Back 4 Blood Crossplay Explained: How does crossplay work in Back 4 Blood?
Fortunately, Back 4 Blood crossplay is available from the start. This allows you to play with people from other platforms on PC, PlayStation and Xbox without restrictions. If you’d prefer to disable (or make sure it’s enabled) this, see the “how to create a multiplayer game” steps below to find out where to check your Back 4 Blood crossplay settings.
The way it works is quite simple. One of the first messages you’ll see when you start the game for the first time is one with your username. You can then share this with friends and people on other platforms so they can add you.
When you start the game for the first time, you will be given a unique username.
In case you’re wondering, there’s also cross-generation. So, if you’re playing on previous-gen consoles and upgrade to current-gen platforms (i.e. PS4 to PS5, or Xbox One to Xbox Series), your game and save file will transfer. Additionally, players of both generations can play with each other as well as others on different platforms.
The only caveat to all this is that there is no cross-save support between different platforms. If you have the game on both PC and PS5, for example, your progression cannot be shared between the two, but you can if you go between PlayStation and Xbox. How to create an online multiplayer game in Back 4 Blood
This may seem simple enough at first, but the way Back 4 Blood is structured can cause some confusion.
First, if you want to create a match, you need to talk to Phillips in the central area, which is where you always finish first when entering the game. It can be located on the north side of your spawn point and it will open the corresponding menu.
There are several options here:
- Crossplay enabled: This is not an option per se, but if you want to confirm whether crossplay is enabled or not, you can do so here.
- Quick Play: Jump to existing games
- Campaign: here you can select the act you want to start with or the particular level; It’s also where you can choose the difficulty you prefer.
- Swarm: allows you to create a game for Back 4 Blood’s PvP mode
- Solo Campaign – This allows you to play the campaign with bots and a number of other solo mode limitations.
- Preferences: Allows you to customize your matchmaking preferences, choosing whether or not to enable cross-play, run a public or private lobby, and make settings for in-game voice chat.
- Replay Tutorial: Pretty simple – you can replay the tutorial in case you want a new rundown of the basics.
If you want the traditional experience of playing the campaign with friends, start with Campaign. If this is your first time playing, you just need to select the difficulty you prefer (we recommend Recruit until you and your teammates have gotten better cards) and select Create Career.
Now, if you have already played some of the levels or acts in the game, you will be able to choose between them, as long as you have the same difficulty as you first played them on.
If you want to create a game with a difficulty level you haven’t played on yet, you’ll have to start from scratch.
To choose a specific level, you must first select the corresponding Act and then the Starting Point, which will open the list of all available stages. If you’re curious about possible limitations when other players join your game or you join theirs, you may find the following section helpful.
How to invite friends in Back 4 Blood
In Back 4 Blood, you can invite friends in two ways: by pressing pause and opening the Social menu, or by clicking on the blank spaces on the Play screen (which we mentioned in the previous section) to send a quick invite to friends on your platform. We are currently online.

Either will show you the Party screen, which includes B4B friends (added via unique usernames), your platform friends, and recent players you’ve crossed paths with. All you have to do is select the friends you want to join and send them an invitation.
From here, you can also change the privacy of your group: open (allowing anyone in the matchmaking system to join), friends only, or invitation only.
It’s worth noting that while being the host in Back 4 Blood allows you to keep all the progress you and your teammates make, this is different if you’re the one joining another session. If you reached Act 3 but the host is in Act 1, you will have to start from Act 1 with him and the rest of the team. Just something to keep in mind!
