Apex Legends cross-platform release date, how to add friends and cross-platform lobbies explained

Apex Legends cross-platform support was one of the most frequently asked questions when the free-to-play shooter launched.

Between Apex Legends launching on multiple platforms at once, the Battle Royale genre having a previous way to offer cross-platform multiplayer (see Fortnite) and being very popular, everyone is eager to complete it together with their friends, regardless of the system they choose.

The good news is that cross-platform play for Apex Legends is available – here’s how it works.

Apex Legends Cross-Platform Release Date: When Will Apex Legends Get Cross-Platform Multiplayer?

Apex Legends will have cross-platform multiplayer starting Tuesday, October 6. This is the same day as the Aftermarket Collection event.

Although it will initially roll out as a beta, and developer Respawn has not set an end date for the feature, for all intents and purposes, cross-platform could be here to stay.

Cross-platform multiplayer was teased prior to the game’s release. In an interview with Eurogamer, Respawn explained that he was working on cross-platform multiplayer.

This was updated with a reveal at EA Play 2020, confirming that the cross-platform game would be coming to PS4, Xbox One, PC, and the new Switch version.

How Apex Legends cross-platform multiplayer works

Cross-platform multiplayer in Apex Legends works as follows:

  • Cross-platform play will be enabled by default.
  • In matchmaking, consoles will play against each other and PC players will only play with PC players. “We want to make sure that PC players with keyboard and mouse are not compared to console players, for reasons that should be obvious,” Respawn said.

  • If a group is a mix of PC and console players, they will be paired in the same group as PC players. “This ensures that console games do not have PC players, but still allows the console player to play with their PC friend if they wish.”
  • It is possible to disable cross-platform matchmaking, which can be done in the settings menu, or on Xbox, in a “similar setting in system settings, outside of the game.” However, doing so means there is a “high probability that queue times will be very, very long” as most other players are likely to play in mixed rooms.
  • You can use in-game voice chat on all platforms.
  • To play with someone on another platform, you must first add them as a friend in the game; see the next section on how this works.

How to add friends in Apex Legends cross-platform multiplayer

With cross-platform multiplayer running by default, you just need to add them as friends and then join their party. Here’s how to get started:

  1. Go to friends and select “Find Friend”, then search for their username and send the request. They will then receive a notification where they can accept the request.
  2. Once you’re friends, they’ll appear on your friends list, regardless of platform. The platform you’re currently playing on will also be mentioned in your friends list, which is helpful so you know ahead of time that you’ll be entering a console-only or PC-only lobby.
  3. Then you must send them an invitation through this friends list to join your group. Please note that if you are on a different platform, the invite notification will only appear in-game and not at the system level (i.e. via Xbox Live, PSN or Origin), so make sure you don’t miss it.

Will Apex Legends offer cross-progression or cross-buys?

Although Apex Legends supports cross-platform play, your account and progress will still be restricted to each individual platform.

What this means in practice is that your unlocks, purchases and stats will be restricted to each individual platform, so you can’t boot into PS4 and then access the same account details on PC. So before you make any major investment of time or money into the game, make sure you choose the platform that you will be happy with in the long run.

At launch, lead producer Drew McCoy told Eurogamer that the feature was not in the works: “Unfortunately, we will never be able to do cross-progress or cross-buy, which is a shame, but due to the way the systems were set up “We can’t reconcile after the fact.”

However, as part of the cross-platform beta announcement, Respawn provided the following update suggesting it might be possible one day: “While we believe this is a valuable feature, it is unfortunately not available for Apex Legends at this time. However “We’ll talk more about this in our Steam release later this year.”
