Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak walkthrough and guide for story quests in order

Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak continues the franchise’s passion for interesting and unique monsters.

Every game and expansion takes this incredibly deep pool of monsters and makes it a little deeper, and Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak is no exception.

While those with long-time Barioth levels will no doubt have guessed the structure of the Sunbreak expansion, it will no doubt be a little daunting for newer players, especially when the difficulty curve starts to really ramp up.

And with the addition of two new mission types, you might be wondering how and how they matter, and this is where this Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak walkthrough and guide comes into play.

Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak Walkthrough

Sunbreak follows in the footsteps of Monster Hunter World’s Iceborne expansion, something that helped simplify the franchise’s story structure, making it much easier for new players to jump in and follow.

Beating the Sunbreak DLC is the easiest Monster Hunter questline yet. It’s all tied to the ‘Key Missions’ in the higher level Master Rank (MR) missions and any urgent missions you’re asked to investigate as you progress.

Like the base game, Rise, your key quests are shown by a red diamond to the left of the quest name when you talk to the quest taker. In Sunbreak, it can be Minoto in Gathering Hub or the new character Chichae in Elgado.

This simple design makes MRI scanning faster and easier than ever. When trying to advance to the next rank, you can choose any key mission that still has a red diamond on the left and no mark on the right. This means you can choose the easy option and fight the weakest monster, or you can choose the one you think will give you the loot you need to level up your weapons and armor. The decision is all yours.

As always, it’s helpful to know what quests and their respective monsters are coming up. The more you progress, the more materials you’ll have available, and if you know your favorite monster is just one area away, you’ll know exactly when to take a story hour to start farming.

If you don’t prefer the format below, we also have a monster list dedicated to what’s in the expansion and when it’s unlocked.

Please note that you must have completed several missions in the base game to start Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak, which then allows you to unlock Master Rank and the Sunbreak missions.

How to unlock MR1

In a nutshell, do the first mission of the Sunbreak DLC:

  • Uninvited Guest: Hunt a Hermataur Daimyo

MR1 Story Missions

From here, you’ll need to complete a set number of key missions to unlock an urgent mission and level up. At this point, the easiest ones are:

  • A Sinking Feeling: Kill a total of 15 Hermataur or Velocipray.
  • Need a hunter ASAP! – Hunt a Kula-Ya-Ku

However, you can also do the following if you’re feeling brave:

  • You Had Me at Poofy – Hunt a Real Ludroth
  • Ruined Nap – Hunt 2 Arzuros

Tip: Do ‘A Sinking Feeling’ and then get the Velocipray armor if you like catching big monsters. The defense boost is great and the Capture Master skill gives you a “high chance to increase capture rewards”, and we all know that the chance to get extra rare items for basically nothing is great.

You’ll also have the option to craft the super-powerful Power Talon and Defense Talon items, so be sure to do so!

Do the urgent mission:

  • Tetrandon Lockdown: Hunt a Tetrandon

Complete two more key quests (any of the following):

  • It could be worse… – Hunt an Aknosom
  • The Red Rolling Terror – Hunt a Volvidon
  • Barroth is off to a great start: hunt down a Barroth
  • [Redacted] – Hunt 2 large Wroggi
  • BRRRR Plus ZZZzzz Is it the same? – Hunt a Lagombi and a Great Baggi

Do another urgent mission:

  • Scarlet Tengu in the Shrine Ruins / Raid of the Scarlet Tengu – Hunt a Blood Orange Bishaten

Tip: It’s like the normal one, but with fire spitting and fire pine cones instead of fruit. Fun.

Congratulations, you just unlocked Master Rank 2! By doing so, you will also have unlocked the Follower Missions and Support Surveys.

While these aren’t necessary to progress through the game, they are a fun addition that really fleshes out the world of Elgado, and are recommended if you need to farm for items and don’t want to just replay the same old quests.

MR2 Story Missions

Perform two of the following key missions:

  • The Queen’s Garden – Hunt a Rathian
  • The Alabaster Eater – Hunt a Khezu
  • Somnacanth Sleep Aid: Hunt a Somnacanth
  • Drops of poison in the sand – Hunt a Pukei-Pukei
  • Bird Wyvern Jamboree: Hunt an Aknosom and a Kula-Ya-Ku

Do the urgent mission:

  • Causing the Wrath of an Anjanath – Hunt an Anjanath

This adds investigator Bahari to his list of well-known characters. He has found footprints of Garangolm, the first of the Three Lords.

Do two more key missions:

  • Rumble in the Jungle – Hunt a Tobi Kadachi
  • Repressed frustrations – Hunt a Basarios
  • Difficult situation: hunt a Jyuratodus
  • Ruined Shrine: Hunt down a Great Izuchi and a Rathian
  • That’s what I call cool! – Hunt all target monsters (Great Izuchi, Great Wroggi and Great Baggi).

Do the urgent mission:

  • A Rocky Rampage / Ganagolm Gone Mad – Hunt a Garangolm

This quest unlocks the Citadel, where Dame Fiorayne joins you on the hunt.

Completing the mission unlocks MR3 and Bahari in Elgado. Congratulations!

Learn how to start Sunbreak, the first expansion, and from there, how to unlock Master Rank, use Switch skill sharing, and advance with our Monster Hunter Sunbreak walkthrough. There’s also a list of monsters, as well as individual pages on how to beat Garangolm, Lunagaron, and Shogun Ceanataur. For the base game, we have several Monster Hunter Rise tips and lists of mineral locations, bone locations, weapon types, how to use Insect Glaives and Kinsects, details on how to join friends in multiplayer, how to capture monsters and learn about Wirebugs and great Wirebugs.

MR3 Story Missions

Do three key missions:

  • Almudron Test – Hunt an Almudron
  • My Ceanataur cries softly – Hunt a Shogun Ceanataur
  • White Knight on Ice – Hunt a Bartioth
  • Oh, My Garsh Harag – Hunt a Goss Harag
  • Night Troubles: Hunt an Anjanath and a Tobi Kadachi

Do the urgent mission:

  • Keep him busy: hunt down an aurora somnacanthus

Like a normal MR Somnacanth, but it’s an ice-type variant. Instead of sleep breathing, use ice breathing. When you see him preparing for an AOE attack, run because he will ignite the freezing mist he exudes. Other than that, pack some Nulberries to get rid of the ice pest and quickly thaw your Silkbugs!

Congratulations, you’re now asked to take on a few more key missions as Bahari analyzes what is clearly a vampire bat. Specifically three more key missions of the following:

  • Shadow in the jungle – Hunt a Nargacuga
  • A Spider Nest in the Sand: Hunt a Rakna-Kadaki
  • Purging Hate – Hunt a Magnamalo
  • A Tale of Two Titans: Hunt a Garangolm and a Somnacanthus
  • Rock, Razor, and Pincers: Hunt a Hermataur Daimyo and a Ceanataur Shogun

Do the urgent mission:

  • Ice Wolf, Red Moon / Howling Moon: Hunt a Lunagaron

Real congratulations this time: you’ve just made it to MR4!

MR4 Story Missions

Do two key missions:

  • The Lure of a Mizutsune: Hunt a Mizutsune
  • Dust Devil Despot – Hunt a Devil
  • King of the Ruined Castle: Hunt a Rathalos
  • Pincers vs. Pyro: Hunt down a Shogun Ceanataur and a Rathian

Do the urgent mission:

  • Search for the Doctor: Hunt an Astalos

This is where you will meet Doctor Tadori, a doctor from your base, Elgado.

It’s time for more key missions; in fact, two:

  • Sacrilegious Thunder Wolf: Hunt a Zinogre
  • A Thousand Scales of Dread: Hunt a Seregios
  • Hot mud in your eyes: hunt a magma Almudrun
  • White Knight, Armored Warrior: Hunt down a Barioth and a Magnamalo

Do the urgent mission:

  • A Sleeping Jungle Thorns – Hunt an Thorns

We’re still in MR4, which means more key missions. Do two of the following actions:

  • Dark Wings, Dark Work: Hunt a Gore Magala
  • Absolute Power: Hunt a Tigrex
  • A great need: hunt a Rakna-Kadaki pyre
  • Creepy Citadel!? – Hunt a Garangolm and a Lunagaron

Do the urgent quest (finally):

  • Witness in the Moonlight / Crimson Moonlight – Slay Malzeno

Congratulations! You have defeated the big bad, Malzeno, and unlocked MR5.

MR5 Story Missions

First, do two key missions:

  • Settle accounts! – Hunt a Rajang
  • Bazelgeuse Warning: Hunt a Bazelgeuse
  • Evil Forest: Hunt a Lunagaron and a Zinogre
  • Blade in the Darkness – Hunt a Gore Magala and a Seregios

Do the urgent mission:

  • Dark Citadel, White Wheel: Kill a Shagaru Magala

Time for more key quests – nothing major, except that all your options are now Elder Dragons… so good luck! Any two of the following:

  • Leave no trace behind: kill a chameleon
  • The Frozen Dictator: Kill a Kushala Daora
  • Burn brighter than the sun: kill a Teostra

It’s time for an urgent search:

  • Qurio Gathering – Hunt a Lunagaron

Tip: This one is a little creepy because there is no endemic life or little monsters. It’s simply an epic battle against Lunagaron. If you depend on spiribugs for your stamina, maybe bring some well-cooked fillets.

Once you have collected your items, an epic cutscene follows. You won’t want to miss it, so put on your headphones and enjoy.

You have now met Gaismagorm, the Archdemon of the Abyss. Kill him to reach HR6.

Do the urgent mission:

  • Test of Courage / The Devil’s Reincarnation – Slay Gaismagorm

Well done, you have put an end to true evil. You also unlocked MR6, the Master Rank cap, and the end credits.

Congratulations!

Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak Master Rank Cap

From here, the first urgent quest is unlocked at MR10, with a couple of extra monsters to unlock beyond that, so get out there and start hunting!
