How to prepare for Garangolm for the first time
Story-wise, Garangolm is your first real test in Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak.
This Fanged Beast monster reinforces its arms by “covering them with elements.”
In practice, this means hitting you with explosions and water damage, so if you’re worried about your defense, be sure to equip yourself with anti-explosion decorations and eat some dango that gives you high protection against water.
Because it attacks with water, Garangolm is weaker to thunder attacks; and since it loves to be covered in moss, it is surprisingly weak to fire attacks.
Don’t bother bringing a water or dragon weapon. However, explosive weapons and anything that produces fire blight will be of great use to you.

How to beat Garangolm in Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak
Garangolm is a unique new monster that uses a very different attack pattern than what you are used to.
Based on King Kong, this normally placid beast will hit like an absolute tank when enraged. At this point, he uses his symbiotic relationship with the flora around him to coat his fists in elemental grime.
He then punches with an explosive fist (the rocky red one) to launch himself into the air before hitting you with his other mossy watery fist. This dual element style is quite impressive and a nice addition to the Monster Hunter roster.
Fortunately, when it’s not exploding across the screen, this massive beast is fairly slow and easy to avoid.
However, carry plenty of Mega Potions in case you get hit, because his final attack (when you see the ground below glow red) can easily take away two-thirds of your health.
As with any monster encounter, once you’ve learned its attack pattern, you can run in circles around it, meaning that while it’s a pretty interesting fight with some excellent monster design, it’s not a great challenge for experienced hunters.
The plan here is to enrage him (make him cover his fists in the elemental grime) and then punch the fists until they break. This will cause him to fall and return to his low-powered state. Rinse and repeat until he is swimming in rewards.
It’s worth noting that while you may feel inclined to stand beneath him to bash his fists with your melee weapon of choice, you do so at your own risk.
One of this monster’s attacks will cause it to launch itself into the air and then crash into you with all its weight. It’s not a small beast either, so consider yourself warned.

How to Get Garangolm Hardfang, Fist, Plowtail, Large Beast Gem Materials, and More
The following materials are available in Garangolm, depending on what you break, carve, or receive as a reward:
Garangolm Master Rank Material List
- Garangolm Bark: Most commonly dropped, but also carved, captured, broken, and used as a target reward.
- Garangolm Shard: Most often as a capture reward, but also as a carving, broken piece, and objective reward.
- Thick Golm Juice: Most often dropped, but also broken, carved, and a target reward.
- Garangolm Hardfang: Usually broken, but also thrown, carved, and as a target reward.
- Golm’s Plow Tail: Very often rotated (tail carve), but also rarely (less than 10% chance) as a capture reward and as a target reward.
- Large Beast Gem: Very rarely (less than 5% chance) from Capture or Broken Pieces or as a Target Reward, and even more rarely as a Carving or Drop.
- Garangom’s Fist: Most often for breaking, but also as a capture reward.
