Zelda: Breath of the Wild walkthrough – Guide and tips for completing the main quests

Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the Wii U’s swan song and the Switch’s key launch game, making it Nintendo’s biggest game in years. It’s also quite different, with a more open and free roaming structure and much less support, but there are still tons of side activities and hidden things to find.

Our Zelda: Breath of the Wild walkthrough will soon provide a complete step-by-step guide to completing the main quest, as well as the many things you can do additionally.

In the meantime, this Zelda: Breath of the Wild guide page provides various tips and tricks for surviving the game’s huge, expansive world, from cooking to combat to upgrading Link’s arsenal and abilities.

Zelda: Breath of the Wild tips for facing the open world of Hyrule

Learn the nuances of combat and exploration.

Breath of the Wild takes inspiration from other, more open-ended adventures (be it Skyrim, Witcher 3, Far Cry, or Monster Hunter) than previous Zelda games, and as such, there’s a lot to learn and master.

Combat Tips:

  • Whenever possible, use stealth in combat so you can get in some free attacks. Crouching immediately makes you harder to detect, while using cover and tall grass will help you even more. For low-level enemies, you can perform an instant-kill ‘sneak attack’ if you manage to sneak your way behind them without being discovered.
  • Aim for the head (or colored weak points) to take double damage in an attack. Using the bow from afar while they haven’t seen you will make this much easier.
  • Jumping and falling will give you an advantage in combat; Pressing attack while falling will slam your weapon into the ground, while drawing the bow will slow down time so you can aim more accurately.
  • Weapons will degrade and break regularly, so collect as many spare clubs, bows, and monster limbs (!) as you can so you always have something to fight with. The last hit when a weapon is broken will also deal additional damage.
  • While you can fight virtually anything at any time, choose your battles. If you feel that your armor and weaponry are not up to the task, retreat and attack later. Or use cooking to temporarily boost your stats.
  • Clearing the Bokoblin camps will give you consumables, weapons, and rupees, but killing all the enemies will unlock a nearby chest with a more valuable item. A useful one in the Great Plateau starting area is the Fire Arrows from the camp just east of the Temple of Time (the one with the giant skull).
  • Enemies will ‘level up’ after you kill a certain number of them, which you can avoid by avoiding combat entirely. However, some areas will always have weaker or stronger enemies, and by not leveling them up, you’ll miss out on the more powerful loot they drop.
  • You can consume food to restore health and swap weapons at any time during battle, as accessing the menus pauses the game, meaning you don’t have to retreat from a difficult situation to get back into the fight.

Once you get the paraglider, you can raid the camps from the air if you want.

Exploration Tips:

  • Inventory management is important, so be sure to eliminate things you definitely don’t need or can’t sell right away. If you can’t pick something up, either from the ground or from the chest, it will stay there until you leave the area.
  • You can spend time sitting by lit campfires until the next morning, noon or evening. Certain enemies, plants, and activities only occur at certain times of the day, so use this to your advantage.
  • Break boxes with heavier melee weapons to obtain weapons and items. Avoid the bombs, which make their contents fly.
  • There’s a stamina bar when you run, climb, and swim, and when it’s completely depleted, expect to run out of air, fall to your destination, or drown. When the bar turns red as you go up, jumping will give you one last massive boost, which you can use to your advantage to reach your destination just in time.
  • You can climb almost anything, whether it’s trees in search of apples, buildings in search of viewpoints, or cliffs in search of new pastures, so don’t feel like a steep slope is a barrier to exploring.
  • Since Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an open-world game, climbing towers is the way to develop your map when visiting new areas. You’ll see them from a considerable distance, but mountains can easily obscure them from other angles as well, so add them as custom waypoints to your map when you’re nearby and activate them whenever you can.

Put on your chef’s hat

Cooking is one of the key skills you must learn in Zelda: Breath of the Wild. You’ll find all sorts of ingredients as you explore, and while they can be consumed on the spot to maintain health, it’s cooking them that will increase their potency.

We’ve explained it in much greater depth in our Breath of the Wild How to Cook and Ingredients, but to start cooking, find a pot on some food and light it with a torch and a nearby fire, then start experimenting. Some general rules that the game teaches you are:

  • Add anything edible and you get something The link can consume
  • The more ingredients, the more health recovery.
  • It’s a good idea to mix heartier ingredients, such as fish and meat, with grains and vegetables.
  • Spices and herbs help, while certain ingredients have certain effects, such as increasing health and stamina, or warming you up.
  • Insects and lizards can produce elixirs and other unusual items, but they are not good for food.

It’s a useful skill to learn that amplifies the potency of ingredients, and in some cases, like early on when you need cold resistance, it can be almost essential. Collect everything you can and play with what you have.

Use your Zelda amiibo to unlock additional features and items

If you’ve been collecting Legend of Zelda amiibo for the last few years, whether those released as part of Super Smash Bros, Twilight Princess HD on Wii U, or the recent 20th Anniversary and Breath of the Wild sets, then you’ll have access to a series of additional functions and items.

The older Zelda amiibo will drop items from the sky, including barrels, fish, and ingredients, while the Breath of the Wild amiibo set will offer early access to powerful in-game items.

Finally, Smash Bros Link will give you Epona, and scanning Wolf Link will add the character Twilight Princess as a companion, both of which you can see in the video above.
