Zelda: Breath of the Wild - Hylian Shield location, how to beat Stalnox for the best shield in the game

Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s Hylian Shield is a familiar piece of equipment to long-time fans of the series, featuring an iconic blue and silver design that appears in virtually every modern Zelda game in one form or another.

Along with the Master Sword, the Hylian Shield returns in Breath of the Wild as an optional item and has the status of the best shield in the game, with great durability and an astonishing 90 defense rating.

There are two ways to obtain the shield: one is a random drop using the ‘Princess Zelda’ Breath of the Wild amiibo (scan her once a day until she appears) and another is by breaking into and exploring Hyrule Castle, which is the more difficult. game area.

Fortunately, there is a somewhat direct path that is easy enough to get there from the beginning of the game.

Before that, though, be sure to check out our sister site Jelly Deals if you want to see their roundup of the best Zelda gifts and merchandise. Because there are amazing things out there.

How to get the Hylian Shield in Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The Hylian Shield is found in a chest inside the Lockup, which is a dungeon area beneath the castle. Fortunately, the route there will take you less than 10 minutes, which includes time to take out a quick and easy mini-boss.

To get there, start on the grounds outside the castle and head to the southwest corner, next to the moat, next to the nearest giant monolith jutting out towards the castle.

Be careful, there are Guardians everywhere around these grounds, so you may have to defeat them (our page on how to easily defeat Guardians can help you) or run past them and their lasers to get there.

If you look north from the moat, you will see the trace of a mining cart in the rocks, just above the water.

Glide and swim into the cavern, and follow the path to the end. Take out the Keeses along the way, while the Stone Pebblits can be easily taken out with a few bombs.

At the end there is a mine cart. Jump, then release and detonate bombs in the final compartment to propel yourself down the track.

The short journey will take you to another nearby cavern. Head through the door and you’ll see a path leading up along the left wall filled with torches.

Follow it, taking the linear corridor to a cracked wall. Blow it up with a bomb.

If you look at your map, you will be in the corner of the underground caverns. The place you need to head to is the large cylindrical room nearby.

To get there, turn left and then left again, to reach a corridor with a cell on your left; You will be told it is the dungeon so you know you are in the right place.

At the end of this hallway there is a broken door on the left. Explode with a bomb to enter the jail cell.

In the jail cell, shoot through the warped bars on the left and take out the Calamity Eye to open the cell door.

The next area is full of enemies, but feel free to ignore them. Instead, turn left out of the cell and run to the area at the far end, where the cycle room and our Shield are located. Head inside.

How to beat Staliox for the Hylian Shield

Here’s a Staliox, a massive beast that’s less intimidating than it looks. Simply aim for his eye and shoot with an arrow to stun him, allowing you to run forward and slide until he gets up again.

Repeat this and he won’t even have a chance to attack you. The eye can also pop out of its socket and rotate, allowing you to land some easy hits there.

If you’re fighting, remember that the Master Sword in this area will increase its strength to 60, and the upgraded Statis Rune can temporarily stop the Staliox, allowing you to aim a little easier.

Once you’re down, a chest will appear containing our Hylian Shield. It’s also worth noting that the beast will drop three weapons: a Royal Halberd, Great Thunderblade, and Royal Broadsword that you can use yourself.

Feel free to continue exploring the castle from here, or just leave now that you’ve claimed what you came for.

How to recover the Hylian Shield if it breaks

While the Hylian Shield has great durability, unlike the Master Sword, it is not invincible and can be broken.

If that happens, it will no longer appear inside the Hylian Castle lock and you will instead need to purchase it from a special vendor after the end of a long quest.

After completing From the Ground Up and building Tarry Town, a vendor named Granté will appear on the rooftop and offer to sell it to you, among other dungeon- and Sanctuary-specific items, as long as it is no longer in your inventory.

YouTube creator Arekkz goes into more detail about this in the video above, as well as a step-by-step video guide on how to get the shield in case you need more specific instructions.
