Also continue from Pastoria City on your adventure and our tour of Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

Below we’ll explain how the Great Swamp works, including how daily spawns work and where to get key items on your first visit, and what to do and where to go next if you’ve made it this far from our step-by-step guide.

Great Marsh Explained: How Daily Spawns Work

The Great Marsh is an area similar to the Safari Zone in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, accessed through Pastoria City, which is divided into six areas with a tram in the center that will take you to each of them, saving you the walk.

Each entrance to the Great Swamp costs 500 Pokémon Dollars, and you have a limited amount of time there, measured by the number of steps you take while walking, running, or cycling. That means using the tram is essential if you want to go to some of the deeper areas of the swamp and still have enough steps left to walk around chasing Pokémon and collecting items.

There’s also a core mechanic here that works differently than anywhere else: rare, rotating daily spawns. Is that how it works.

How daily spawns work

Before acquiring the National Pokédex, there are eight special Pokémon spawns that can only occur in Great Marsh through this method. Each day, an unknown number of them will appear in the Great Swamp, and those that do spawn will be set to only appear in a specific area (there are six in total).

To find out where the daily rare Pokémon appear, you can use the binoculars on the top floor of the Great Swamp entrance building, which cost 100 Pokémon Dollars each time you use them. These do not change spawns and do not need to be used for them to appear (we have personally verified this). Binoculars are just a method to help you locate which area the Pokémon you’re looking for will appear that day, so you can head there and run through the tall grass until it appears.

Binoculars, meanwhile, can show any Pokémon that appear in that area. So for example: looking at a pair might show Area 1, with a Bibarel. This does not necessarily This means no rare Pokémon appear in Area 1! Keep reusing those binoculars and you might eventually show that a Carnivine, for example, is also showing up in Area 1 that day.

Below are the rare spawns that may appear. Note that several of these Pokémon, such as Roselia, can be caught elsewhere, while Skorupi, for example, can be caught in Pokémon Hideaways in Grand Underground. Again, several (more than one total, but possibly less than one for all six areas at a time) can spawn per day, and it is not necessary to use the binoculars to trigger the spawns.

Should you use bait or mud in the Great Swamp?

Whether you use Bait or Mud depends on two things: what effect you want and whether you like to gamble or play it safe.

To start, let’s explain the basics: in Great Marsh you cannot fight or weaken Pokémon, you simply find them and are presented with four options: throw a ball, cast Mud, cast Bait, or flee the battle. Throwing bait and mud has two effects.

  • Bait: Increases the chances of Pokémon fleeing; increases the chances that you can successfully catch it with a ball.
  • Mud: Decreases the chances of a Pokémon fleeing; It decreases the chances of successfully catching it with a ball.

It may sound backwards, since the game uses the word “bait,” but basically: throw mud at Pokémon you don’t want it to run away from. Throw Bait if you want to bet on them running before you’ve had a chance to throw a ball.
