Zelda: Breath of the Wild DLC 1 guide: The Master Trials explained, including new item and gear locations

The Zelda: Breath of the Wild DLC 1: Trial of the Sword is the first of two complementary content that will come to the great adventure on Switch and Wii U.

The first adds new modes and features that expand the existing world: a more difficult Master Mode, a new Special Trial, a Hero’s Path Mode, new equipment and a new fast travel method with the Travel Medallion, in this Zelda: Breath of the Wild DLC 1 Guide that explains how to access all of them.

There are also several expansion pass chests that give you bonus items and a stylish Nintendo Switch t-shirt.

What’s inside Zelda: Breath of the Wild DLC 1 and how do you access it?

When you purchase the Expansion Pass and update the game to the latest version (on Switch, select the Zelda game icon, press the + button, then System Update), you’ll be informed of all the new content on the home screen. Here’s a quick summary:

Loading your save will activate all quests, which must be completed before you can access their relevant additions. Hero’s Path will be available from the start, while Master Mode will be accessible immediately from the main menu.

New features in Zelda DLC 1: The Master Trials

Three key additions to the game itself in Zelda: Breath of the Wild are a more difficult Master Mode and a special Trial, known as Trial of the Sword, and the addition of the Hero’s Map.

Master Mode

Master Mode will allow players to take on Breath of the Wild on a higher difficulty, using a new, separate save file accessed from the main menu.

Highlights include:

  • All enemies have an increased “range”, so red Bokoblins appear as blue, and so on.
  • The toughest enemies appear in traditionally “low-level” locations, such as Lynels on the Great Plateau.
  • There are “higher-ranking enemies that you won’t find in the normal game,” according to Nintendo, so expect some new surprises.
  • Enemies regain health during battle and detect you sooner as you approach.
  • Floating rafts supported by balloons appear around Hyrule, containing enemies and treasure chests.
  • Only a manual save and an automatic save will be available.

Needless to say, it’s a very difficult challenge that requires more care than ever in combat, both when choosing your battles and conserving the few items you have, so make sure you’ve invested at least a few hours in the version normal game. before even trying.

sword test

The Trial of the Sword is the new name for what was initially announced as Cave of Trials, a feature that was also present in previous Zelda games like Twilight Princess and Wind Waker, under the guise of Cave of Ordeals and Savage Labyrinth.

Could this be where you access the Sword Trial?

This unique location will be accessible to those with the DLC once it is released and features a special trial with a particularly large reward for dedicated players.

Inside, you will be stripped of all your items, including weapons and armor, and must defeat wave after wave of enemies. After progressing through around 45 rooms, you’ll get a special prize: an upgrade for your Master Sword.

Once the Trial of the Sword is completed, the Master Sword will be “awakened”; It will always be on up to level 60 with no cooldown. Since it will still be unbreakable, it may become the most useful weapon in the game.

Note that:

  • You need to have the Master Sword unlocked before you can play the Trial. Once you have it, place it back on its pedestal to begin the test.
  • Weapons, armor and items are removed, but your hearts and stamina remain, so it’s worth visiting as many shrines as possible beforehand.
  • There are 45 floors, with two breaks along the way, one third and two thirds of the way, from which you can continue. If you die between these respite periods, you must start from the last one. After one of these, your inventory is cleared once again.
  • Someone has already beaten Trial of the Sword, clocking in at a surprisingly long four hours, which you can watch in full below:

The hero’s path

Hero’s Path mode is a new tracking system that will be available as soon as you get the DLC. Basically, it shows that you’ve followed your path through the game so far, that you can rewind and fast forward.

The main use for this is to track where you’ve been and where you haven’t, or maybe where exactly that interesting thing was that you climbed over that unidentifiable hilltop trying to get to once.

It tracks up to 200 hours of gameplay, so you can rest relatively easy knowing that most, if not all, of your gameplay will be tracked by it. And yes, it has been following you since the beginning, so it will work on any save file you throw at it.

New Gear Locations in Zelda: Breath of the Wild DLC 1 The Master Trials

Finally, some new equipment and items will be available in the Master Trials DLC. As soon as you load the game, you are given missions to start, and we have specific locations for each one as follows:

It’s worth noting that the above items cannot be upgraded like traditional equipment in the original adventure. So while the latter set has additional abilities, such as increasing your running speed at night while wearing the Tingle costumes, they won’t be as powerful in terms of defense as the endgame armors.

That said, if you’re looking for new adventures or pure novelty, they’re worth tracking down. As the game mentions, these are all unique, so make sure you don’t delete them from your inventory!

Thanks to a new update, it is now possible to play Zelda Breath of the Wild in virtual reality. Do you want help with the main game? Our Zelda: Breath of the Wild walkthrough can help you complete Divine Beasts Vah Ruta, Vah Rudiana, Vah Medoh, and Vah Naboris and more. It’s also explained how to get the Master Sword, Hylian Shield, and all Zelda Captured Memories and Great Fairy Fountain locations, while our Shrine locations hub and Shrine maps explains where to find and solve each puzzle room, including locations. of dragons and the solutions of Labyrinth. We also have a DLC 1 guide and a DLC 2 guide, including all of the Tingle, Majora’s Mask, Phantom, and Midna outfit locations.

Zelda DLC Expansion Pass Chest Locations

In addition to the above, as part of purchasing the Expansion Pass, you will also have access to three chests within the Great Plateau starting area. Even if you started the game, you can go back and grab them.

Ruby: This chest is next to the Oman Au Shrine with the Magnesis Test.

Bomb Arrow x5: From the Kah Namut Shrine with the Cryonis Trial, run around the back and look south. The chest is visible on the outer wall below; Just jump or slide down and open it.

Nintendo Switch T-shirt: Head to the Ja Baij Shrine with the Bomb Trial and climb the wall in front.

Like the other sets above, make sure you don’t delete the shirt, as there is no way you can get another one. Enjoy!

What we know about other Zelda Breath of the Wild DLC

The Zelda: Breath of the Wild DLC is available only through a Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Expansion Pass, which is available to order now.

To be clear, purchasing the Expansion Pass is the only way to get any of the DLC packs, so it’s all or nothing. The package itself costs £17.99 or €19.99.

This first DLC, The Master Trials, is the first of two to appear in the expansion pass, with the other, Champion’s Ballad, arriving sometime in winter 2017.

The second DLC will focus on Zelda and the four champions who fought and died 100 years before the events of the main game. As our announcement story speculates, could we explore the world of Hyrule from 100 years ago and possibly play Zelda?

The pack will launch with four new amiibo, based on the four champions, which can be purchased together in one pack. Its functionality has not yet been revealed.
