Xbox Series accounts - How to add new accounts, guests and remove accounts from the system

When you set up your Xbox Series X or S for the first time, you’ll need to sign in to a Microsoft account, which will give you access to all games and subscriptions from previous consoles or other devices.

It is possible to add other accounts to the system to log in as well, whether they are family members who want to use the console or friends who come to play co-op and want to continue their own progress and earn achievements.

This page explains how to add and remove users on Xbox Series .

How to add accounts on Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One, from existing Gamertags to guest accounts

When you initially set up your Xbox console, you must sign in to a Microsoft account. This will act as the primary user of the console, and if that’s the only account you need, then you’re all set.

Of course, you may want to add additional accounts that belong to others, which is useful if they have their own games that they want to bring to the console, or simply want to continue their progress on the console, earn achievements, etc. .

To add users, press the Guide button (the glowing Xbox logo) on your controller. This will overlay a menu on the left side of the screen.

Now go all the way to the right, to Profile and System.

Now select the Add or Change option. This gives you a list of accounts currently available in the system. If you’ve added users before, this is where they appear.

Otherwise, you have two options at the bottom: Add Guest and Add New.

Add Guest adds a temporary account for the current game session and is useful if you have a friend who just wants to join you in, say, local co-op and doesn’t care about saving progress or achievements. This will instantly create a guest account with the same name as the currently registered Gamertag and a number.

Meanwhile, Add New will let you sign in to an additional Microsoft account and get all the Xbox details.

This has the same level of security as logging in on any other device, so if you require second-factor authentication to log in, make sure you have it on hand.

When you sign in, you can also set the level of access available for that account in this console, such as requiring a password every time someone tries to use it. This is useful if you want the account to be accessible on this console for a later date, but you don’t want someone to accidentally use it and play your saved games.

How to remove users from Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One

First, you need to open the Settings app. Chances are, this is one of your most recent apps, meaning it will already be on your home screen, but if not, you can find it here:

  • By pressing the Guide button on the controller, selecting the last option on the right and looking for Settings in the middle
  • From the main console panel, press Y to search and then type Settings
  • Selecting ‘My games & apps’ (which is always in the main panel), then Apps on the left, then select Settings

Once you have opened Settings, in the menu options on the left, go to Account and then Delete Accounts at the bottom right.

Then a list of all system accounts will appear, from Gamertags to guest accounts. Select the one you want and then delete it.

Remember, you can always keep a Gamertag on another console and password protect it, which ensures that no one can access it but saves you from having to follow the steps outlined earlier on the page.
