US Secretary of State Anatony Blinken said in an interview that China was considering offering ammunition and weapons to Russia. This would involve involvement in the Kremlin’s war effort which, according to the Secretary, would be a “serious problem.”
Furthermore, China does not criticize Russia for its actions towards Moscow. At the same time, the country firmly insists that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries will be maintained.
Now the main concern is whether China wants to offer material support to Moscow because of this philosophy.
Does China support Russia in the Ukraine war?
From the beginning, China has tried to create a very fine line against the Russian invasion. However, at various times, this line has been contradicted by his actions.
First, China says Russia felt quite compelled and provoked into action by NATO’s westward expansion. A few weeks before the invasion on February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin was received by Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing for the opening of the Winter Olympics. During this moment, both parties shook hands and pledged their commitment to a friendship “without limits.” Since then, China has become completely blind to Western criticism and has kept its promise.
According to Blinken, China intends to have both. Blinken makes a strong statement saying that China continues to try to publicly portray an image of support for Ukraine, but privately supports Russia. It has offered non-lethal assistance that directly aids and abets Russia’s war efforts.
Is there any material support also to speak of?
Well, so far, China’s support for Russia has only been political and rhetorical. This is evident in the case where Beijing helps prevent attempts to condemn Moscow at the UN. At a security conference in Munich, Blinken shared his concerns about the possibility of China providing weapons to Russia in the war against Ukraine. Linda Thomas, US ambassador, also shares the same concerns.
What is China’s opinion on the matter?
China’s Foreign Ministry made a statement after the meeting between Blinken and Wang saying that it has played a constructive role in the Ukraine issue by respecting principles, thus promoting peace and talks, from the beginning.
The Ministry clarifies that the China-Russia partnership “is established on the basis of non-alignment, non-confrontation and non-targeting of third parties.” The ministry also accuses the United States, stating that the latter has been the fuel for the fire, with the intention of obtaining benefits.
While the statements sound diplomatic and show China’s neutral position, speculation about the country’s activities still persists. However, it would be wrong to say that China has provided direct aid to the Russian military.
