The Warzone nuclear event has been a long time coming and will usher in perhaps the biggest change to the battle royale game since its launch in March 2020.
This second in-game event for Warzone (the first saw a Black Ops: Cold War reveal late last year) will be followed by a map update, which is heavily suggested to have an ’80s theme.
This will arrive as part of Season 3, which will offer the usual range of new operators, weapons and a new Battle Pass. All of this will be shared between Black Ops: Cold War, as in previous seasons.

Warzone Nuclear Event Part 2 Time on BST, CEST, EDT and PDT Explained: When is the Second Nuclear Event in Warzone?
Update (April 22): After the live event on April 21, we witnessed the nuclear bombing of Verdansk. Funnily enough, we’re not done yet. Once you have downloaded the latest update and logged into the game, Season 3 will begin, but you will only be able to play on Rebirth Island, with a new countdown until later today, where we will see the second part of the nuclear event and the probable return of Verdansk.
Part 2 of the Warzone Nuclear Event will take place on Thursday, April 22, and will launch at the following times:
- UK: 8pm (BST)
- Western Europe: 9:00 p.m. (CEST)
- US East Coast: 3 pm (EDT)
- US West Coast: 12:00 pm (PDT)
In other words, at the same time as yesterday’s event. Until then, Season 3 has begun, allowing you to test out balance changes, unlock new Battle Pass skins, and try out Rebirth Island before the new map arrives later tonight, which has already seen a number of leaks and official advances.

Original Report: Following rumors dating back almost a year, which have been solidified with the arrival of zombies in Season 2, the arrival of nukes and an updated map is almost here.
The long-awaited Warzone nuclear event will take place on Wednesday, April 21, and will launch at the following times:
- UK: 8pm (BST)
- Western Europe: 9:00 p.m. (CEST)
- US East Coast: 3 pm (EDT)
- US West Coast: 12:00 pm (PDT)
Make sure your game is fully updated ahead of time (I saw a minor update on Monday that addressed the powerful Sykov pistol) and log in just before the above times to participate. If it’s anything like the previous live event where Black Ops: Cold War was revealed, there will be a dedicated playlist to join, which should be called Operation Rapid Sunder.
What can we expect from the nuclear event in Warzone?
Although Activision has only confirmed the start time and to “prepare for a crescendo of total chaos within Warzone,” we have an idea of what to expect from the event thanks to Season 2 bugs, leaks, and story hints.
First, let’s go back to May 2020, fairly early in Warzone’s lifespan, when the game introduced an interesting puzzle: opening bunkers across the map. The most mysterious was Bunker 11, which featured a number of oddities not found anywhere else on the map, including a server room and a button that revealed a nuclear warhead.
The nuke couldn’t be interacted with, but it did spark the idea that nukes could be used in the game at some point, possibly to usher in a big change, like a new map.
It wasn’t until 2021 when these theories really started to bear fruit. Season 2, in late February, saw the arrival of zombies, a staple of the Black Ops series. These appeared thanks to a crashed tanker on the southern edge of the map, introducing a new named location near the prison, Shipwreck.
The season also featured several unnamed locations (missile silos) near the Military Base, Hills and Park. Each location features a small maze of rooms to explore, with one important detail: screens with a zombie-like icon and a percentage underneath.

As the season has progressed, zombies have invaded more areas of the map and the ‘Containment Protocol’ percentage, as displayed on those screens, has increased. Meanwhile, the spread of radiation has even turned players into zombies.

At the end of last week, this percentage reached 100% and, along with it, the news of a live event confirmed for April 22.
It is very likely that in the live event these silos will launch nuclear weapons and detonate them throughout Verdansk to contain the spread of zombies.
A newsletter sent out in the days leading up to the nuclear event included this image and the subject ‘Final update from Verdansk?’.
It’s unknown exactly how this will play out, but we already know what these missiles will look like, thanks to a series of fun glitches that have seen them launch early, albeit without a mushroom cloud and map-wide devastation below.

It is likely that when the event concludes, the game will go dark until the launch of Season 3.

Warzone Season 3 Release Time Explained: What can we expect from the new Warzone season?
Shortly after the nuclear event concludes, Season 3 will begin. Warzone Season 3 will launch on Thursday, April 22 following an update, which will roll out at the following times:
- UK: 5am (BST)
- Western Europe: 06:00 (CEST)
- US East Coast: 12 am (EDT)
- US West Coast: 9 pm April 21 (PDT)
To clarify, the update will go live at the times above, but once downloaded, you’ll be able to start playing Season 3. Since we’re awaiting the arrival of an updated map, expect a sizable download.
First, let’s look at what has been confirmed; several new weapons (PPSH-41 and the Swiss K31 at launch) and operators (including Wraith and Captain Price at launch), along with new maps and other additions for Black Ops: Cold War multiplayer and Zombies:
But what about Warzone? The only thing mentioned is a “map update”, while an official blurb says “Status reports are still coming in from the Armistice Central Command Containment Protocol.”
As for what’s next, we know from leaks that the map will undergo significant changes.
Specifically, we can expect a Cold War-era version of the map, with changes to existing named locations to better fit the period.
In addition to a Cold War-style revamp of familiar locations, new locations are also suggested, including a mine shaft and a radar array.
This, as well as the April 22 date, was previously confirmed in a VGC report (following a revelation by the Twitter account). On thin ice) which states that the new map will be “an evolution of Verdansk, rather than a completely new design.”
When can you expect the Warzone map to undergo some significant changes?
Since then, Activision has been struggling to contain the leaks, so don’t expect to see much of a preview before the map is released.
One question is how this will work, narratively. Why does the advent of nuclear weapons in particular lead us to travel to a different time period? Or is it just a fancy way to conclude one era before moving on to the next? The return of Modern Warfare’s Captain Price in the new season certainly makes things confusing.
As for the period itself, it’s obvious that Activision wants Warzone, now its flagship Call of Duty game, to mirror its latest release, Black Ops: Cold War, albeit six months late; The VGC report says that the plan was originally for this map to arrive closer to the game’s launch, but “several factors” caused the timing to change. But it remains to be seen if there will be some sort of story explanation to accompany the changes.
Whatever happens, it’s also very possible that there are some new mechanics and features yet to be revealed, although it’s best to keep expectations in check. A new map, even a revamped version of Verdansk, is a pretty big update!
