Its base of operations has three main wings: Medical, Technical and Security. Within each wing there are several departments, such as clinical and quarantine, that require resources to become operational. Once up and running, new skills, talents, and perks are unlocked that help shape an agent’s core capabilities before they fire a single shot.

Medical, technological and security skills

Only two skills can be equipped at a time and they are mapped to the controller’s shoulder buttons. Skills can be “mastered” over time, unlocking more benefits, but only after you have created all the upgrades for the corresponding installation.

The two medical examples we have seen so far are Pulse and First Aid. Pulse sends a signal to detect nearby threats, and when modified, can also be used to highlight loot, increase damage to enemies, or block an opponent’s Pulse signal. The First Aid skill takes the form of a device that is dropped at your agent’s feet or thrown like a grenade to heal other teammates within a small radius.

Further down the medical tree are abilities like Support Station, which is used to revive teammates, while Recovery Link can be used to heal or cure status ailments. Recovery Link is also classified as an exclusive skill: they take longer to recharge due to their greater strength.

The list of technologies begins with Sticky Bomb, an explosive that can be manually detonated or modified to explode depending on the enemy’s proximity. All Tech Gadgets are Weapon Skills, granting auto turrets, mines, and the exclusive Tactical Link skill that increases damage and critical hit chance for the entire party.

Safety skills enhance individual or group defense builds, starting with a ballistic shield that absorbs a large amount of damage but limits you to firing a weapon while it is in use. Upgrading the Security Wing leads to Smart Cover, Mobile Cover, and finally the exclusive ability Survivor Link, the opposite of Tactical Link in that it increases damage resistance for you and your nearby teammates.

Health, technology and safety talents

While skills are unlocked after areas of each wing have been upgraded, talents require agents to have reached a certain level before they are available. Four talents can be activated at the same time and there are 24 to choose from. Making the most of your Talents depends on which Skills you are most likely to use, and vice versa.

The health-related talents listed under Medic serve to improve an agent’s physical condition or significantly degrade an enemy’s. Health bars can be expanded by using the Adrenaline talent each time a medkit is applied, for example.

On the technological side, an agent’s combat effectiveness is enhanced by talents that increase the weapon’s behavior (damage dealt, reload times, etc.) and technological abilities. How you typically prefer to attack and pressure your opponents will determine your choice of tech talent.

For example, controlling areas for your friends to move would require Demolition Expert, which increases the damage potential of the next thrown grenade by 40% for 15 seconds if the first one lands. If you need to shoot enemies quickly, Police Up gives you a 25% chance to auto-reload all ammo types. Agents who take advantage of mobility to make themselves a more difficult target receive a 30% reduction in damage taken reduction if evasive action is in play.

Situational awareness is where security talents come to the fore, although some of them could easily be placed within the tech tree. One is None, for example, offers a 50% chance of saving your bullet after scoring a headshot. Steady Hands reduces recoil when you’re in cover, and Precision tracks an enemy who’s been headshot for 10 seconds.

Medical and technological benefits

Anyone familiar with Call of Duty and Destiny will be familiar with the division Perk System: Permanent performance upgrades for a character that fit a particular playstyle. There is no need to activate the perks, just equip them and their benefits are continuous. The Inventory tech perk expands storage by 10 slots, for example, while Black Market Vendor allows purchases in the Dark Zone from your usual base. Perks provide definite advantages, but are not game-changers as such.

Medical benefits, such as protective measures, allow access to areas with a higher level of contamination, while the supplier provides automatic replenishment of consumables such as water, canned foods, energy bars and soft drinks once an hour. Perks in this category often serve to keep your agent around longer.

Tech Perks are more aimed at players who enjoy creating new equipment or making the most of existing supplies. The perks of water and energy bars increase the duration of their related effects by several precious seconds.

Once you’ve balanced your own attributes with skills, talents, and perks, you still need to consider your team’s overall capabilities and adjust your gear to suit. Those who patrol together regularly will want to go beyond their individual comfort zones and experiment to create a balanced fighting force. This becomes more important when it comes to conquering quests efficiently on higher difficulties and also in record time. Expect the forums to light up with this type of optimization talk in the coming weeks.
