Pokémon Sun and Moon Magearna QR Code – event details and how to catch the mythical Pokémon Magearna

The Pokémon Sun and Moon Magearna QR Code event is the first of the Generation 7 Mythical Pokémon giveaways, and also the first of its kind to use the 3DS’s QR scanner feature.

It’s easy to do, and since these Mythic Event Pokémon are so hard to come by, you also have the chance to get your hands on what will likely become an extremely rare Pokémon, so it’s worth the effort!

Magearna QR Code Giveaway: When and where will the event and code take place?

Magearna North America QR code – see below for instructions on how to scan it.

Magearna has already been given away via QR code in Japan, and players received the code if they went to see the latest animated film, Volcanion and the Ingenious Magearna, earlier this year.

For North America and Europe, the Magearna giveaway begins December 5, 2016, and unlike other recent mythical giveaways, it will run indefinitely thanks to the infinite availability of QR codes. This goes against the Pokémon Company’s original word that distribution would end in March 2017.

The Magearna European QR Code – instructions below!

The North American QR code is now active, which you can see on the right as the first image above; Please note that it is region locked and therefore will only work for those with a North American system.

After some delay, the European QR code for Magearna is now also available.

Players are invited to watch the same movie as the Japanese one, Volcanion and the Ingenious Magearna, although this time for free on the Pokémon TV site.

The code to purchase Magearna is shown right at the end, which you can jump to. Since the movie is free and skippable, for ease of use we have included it here on the right, as the bottom image of the two.

How to get Magearna in Pokémon Sun and Moon

To physically have Magearna in your game, you will first need to gain access to the QR scanner in Sun and Moon.

The scanner is available from the start, but the actual function needed for Magearna requires that you have already become the Champion of Alola Island, something our full Pokémon Sun and Moon walkthrough can certainly help you with.

Once you’ve done that, open the QR scanner by tapping the icon on the second page of the bottom screen menu. You can then scan the corresponding code from the two included above for your region, or you can head to the official Pokémon site and get the Magearna QR code on the screen there if you’re in North America, or watch the Volcanion movie straight to the end if you are in Europe.

Then, simply point your 3DS’s external camera at the QR code and press the A button to scan. Then you will have to go to a store in the city of Hau’oli called Antiquities of the Ages, where a delivery man will deliver it to you. The mythical Magearna should now be all yours! We should also remind you to save quickly, as each QR code can only be used once.

Be sure to check out our page dedicated to QR Codes and the QR Scanner in Pokémon Sun and Moon, where we also provide a list of all the Alolan and non-Alolan Pokémon you can acquire with the scanner, as well as our pages on other freebies, such as like the code for two Mega Mewtwo Stones, Mewtonite X and Y as well.
