How to choose Ruby or Sapphire in Pokémon Go

To choose between Ruby or Sapphire for the Go Tour: Hoenn event in Pokémon Go, you must first complete the Primal Rumblings special research quest.

This quest was released on Friday, February 17, and is available to all players because, aside from the Masterwork Research: Wish Granted quest, Go Tour: Hoenn is free for all Pokémon Go trainers.

You will receive a ticket after completing the second and final step of the Primal Rumblings quest. This ticket can be found in your item bag and when selected will allow you to choose between Ruby or Sapphire gear.

Find the ticket in your bag and then select it to choose your team.

Once you have made your selection and have been asked if you are sure, you will receive a badge representing your choice.

It is important to note that you cannot change your equipment once your selection is made, so choose wisely. If you want to know the version differences between Ruby and Sapphire teams, read on!

If you participated in the Go Tour: Hoenn Las Vegas event, your team choice will remain and you will not be able to change it.

Explanation of the Ruby vs Sapphire challenge and version differences in Pokémon Go Tour Hoenn

Inspired by Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire for the Game Boy Advance, the Go Tour: Hoenn event asks you to choose between two teams: Ruby or Sapphire. There are a number of differences between the two teams that you should take into account when making your choice.

Version differences

Here’s a quick breakdown of the differences between the Ruby and Sapphire versions of the Go Tour: Hoenn Global event, which we explore in more detail after the lists:

Differences from the Ruby version:

  • Ruby version badge
  • Contribute to the Ruby team during hourly Field Research challenges.
  • Latios will spawn in the wild
  • Taking a snapshot with Latios in the wild grants you another encounter with the legendary.

While the following bonuses are available to all players, if Team Ruby wins the Hourly Field Research Challenge, there will be:

  • Increased number of Primal Groudon raids
  • An additional list of wild Pokémon encounters will appear in Ruby

Differences from the Sapphire version:

  • Sapphire version badge
  • Contribute to the Sapphire team during hourly Field Research challenges.
  • Latias will spawn in the wild
  • Taking a snapshot with Latias in the wild grants you another encounter with the legendary.

The following bonuses are available to all players if Sapphire teams win the Hourly Field Research challenge:

  • Increased number of Primal Kyogre raids
  • An additional list of wild Pokémon encounters will appear in Sapphire

Your choice of team decides which side you are on during the Field Research Challenge during each hour of the event.

This challenge requires you to complete a special field investigation every hour of the event, between 10 am and 6 pm (local time) on Saturday, February 25 and Sunday, February 26, 2023, and the team that completes the most of this field research worldwide will enjoy two bonuses during the next hour.

The first bonus involves having a selection of additional Pokémon that appear more frequently during the hour, which you can find later in this guide.

The second advantage is to have a larger number of Primal Raids for the Primal Legendary connected to the team you selected, and these raids will be available to all players. If Ruby wins the challenge, there will be a higher number of Primal Groudon raids, but if Sapphire wins, there will be more Primal Kyogre raids.

Outside of the Field Research Challenge, the team you choose decides what bonus encounter you’ll get by taking a snapshot of Latias or Latios in the wild.

If you are on Team Ruby and take a photo of Latios in the wild, you will get another encounter with this Pokémon. Meanwhile, if you choose Sapphire, you’ll get an extra encounter with Latias if you take a snapshot of this Pokémon.

Finally, you will receive a badge representing the team you choose after making your selection.

It is important to note that players who attended the Go Tour: Hoenn Las Vegas event cannot change their team selection.

These are the badges you will receive when choosing your team.

What is the same in both versions?

Aside from the above, everything will remain the same no matter which version you choose for the Go Tour: Hoenn Global event.

You can still purchase a ticket for the Masterwork Research: Wish Granted quest, complete the Chasing Legends special research quest, capture all Habitat Hour Pokémon, and participate in Primal Raids for both Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre.

Unlike previous Go Tour events, this means you don’t have to find another player to complete any collection challenges. This means that Go Tour: Hoenn is much better for players who live in rural areas or prefer to play alone, because it ensures that everyone can enjoy the event without having to worry about missing any aspect of it.

Although we recommend investing in some Remote Raid Passes if you’re not part of a local Pokémon Go group or playing with friends…

Pokémon Go Tour Hoenn Ruby and Sapphire: Which is the best team?

When it comes to choosing between Team Ruby and Sapphire for the Go Tour: Hoenn Global event, it all comes down to personal preference.

Primal Groudon and Primal Kyogre share the same powerful stats, so you don’t have to pick a team with the goal of focusing on the strongest legendary. Instead, we recommend taking the time to gather enough energy for both evolutions.

You could base your decision on whether you have Latias or Latios in your Pokédex, as your team choice will give you the chance to capture one of these legendary Pokémon in the wild.

You can encounter Latias or Latios depending on your choice of team.

It’s also worth keeping in mind the additional wild encounters each team offers, especially since they include the regional exclusive Pokémon: Volbeat and Illumise. If you are missing one of these Pokémon, we recommend choosing its specific team to increase your chances of catching it during the event.

Personally, I choose Ruby because since I already have the Water-type Platinum Badge, the additional wild encounters it offers give me the opportunity to focus on the Ground-type Badge. (And because I played Pokémon Ruby on the GBA when I was a kid…)

The Season of Adventure Abundance is here! Its first event is A Paldean Adventure, which sees the true launch of Gen 9 and the special research mission A Paldean Adventure. You can also work on the Timed Investigation: Master Ball mission and compete in Go Battle League. Be sure to compete in Shadow Raids, complete routes, use Daily Adventure Incense for a chance to encounter Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres. This incense can also give you encounters with other rare Pokémon in Pokémon Go.

Additional Ruby Wild Encounters During Pokémon Go Tour Hoenn

If you decide to be on Team Ruby during Go Tour: Hoenn Global and your team won the last hour’s Field Research Challenge, the following Pokémon will appear in the wild more frequently over the next hour:

  • Plusle
  • Volbeat
  • trap
  • Solrock
  • Castform sunny form

Remember: all of the Pokémon listed above have had their shiny forms released in Pokémon Go!

Additional Sapphire Wild Encounters During Pokémon Go Tour Hoenn

If you choose Team Sapphire during Go Tour: Hoenn Global and your team won the last hour’s Field Research Challenge, the following Pokémon will appear more frequently in the wild over the next hour:

  • minun
  • glow up
  • wailmer
  • Lunatone
  • Rainy Castform

Don’t forget: all previous Pokémon have had their shiny forms released in Pokémon Go!

I hope you enjoy the Go Tour: Hoenn Global event, no matter which team you choose!
