Pokémon Go Kyogre counters, weaknesses and moveset explained

Kyogre, the legendary ‘Sea Basin’ Pokémon from Pokémon Sapphire, is a raid boss in Pokémon Go.

If you want to catch Kyogre and add its entry to your Pokédex, then you need to know Kyogre’s weaknesses and counters in Pokémon Go.

Like all Legendary Pokémon, Kyogre will appear in five-star raids, and unless you’re level 50 and have your counters maxed out, you’ll almost certainly need to team up with a group of trainers to defeat it. Thanks to Remote Passes, you can now battle this legendary Pokémon in the comfort of your home.

Primal Kyogre was also released in Pokémon Go as part of the Go Tour: Hoenn event and you can have a shiny Primal Kyogre!

Cons and weaknesses of Kyogre in Pokémon Go

Beating raid bosses in Pokémon Go starts with understanding what the boss is weak against, and Kyogre is no exception. Here’s an explanation of Kyogre’s weaknesses and the best counters to defeat Kyogre in Pokémon Go:

  • Kyogre Type – Water
  • Kyogre is weak against Grass and Electric types.
  • Kyogre Mega counters: Mega Sceptile is the way to go, followed by Mega Manectric, Mega Venusaur, and Mega Ampharos, each of which lean towards dual Grass or Electric.
  • Kyogre Counters: The best non-mega counter for a mono-Water type is still Kartana, so be sure to bring one with Razor Leaf and Leaf Blade if you have one. After that, we’ll see Zekrom (but note that Kyogre has Blizzard), Xurkitree, Zarude, Primal Groudon (with Solar Beam), Raikou, Electivire, Thunderus (Therian), and Zapdos.
  • Other Kyogre Notes: Dragons run the risk of getting hit by a blizzard, which is always going to hurt. Your best bet is to start with one of the recommended Megas, as this will upgrade your teammates’ Pokémon and shorten the time it takes to defeat this boss.

This Kyogre may or may not be the right size.

Kyogre CP in Pokémon Go

Kyogre will have the following CP ranges when fighting or trying to catch it in Pokémon Go:

  • Raid Boss CP: 54,411 CP
  • Kyogre Max CP – 4652 CP
  • CP range when caught: 2260 to 2351 CP
  • CP range increased by weather (rain) when caught: 2825 to 2939 CP

Kyogre Charged Moves:

Everything we know about Kyogre

The shiny version of Kyogre was released in June 2018 and follows the Swampert school of sweet glitters, swapping its blue for a majestic purple. As you can see in the preview below, it looks pretty impressive.

Thanks to Reddit user Krusiv for the preview.

Kyogre debuted alongside most of Gen 3 in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire; although he was exclusive to Pokémon Sapphire, as he was the mascot of that game. This legendary Pokémon was also tied into the Pokémon Sapphire story, with the evil Team Aqua planning to use its power to flood most of the world. They were clearly big fans of the movie Waterworld.

The Weather trio is at it again.

Along with Groudon and Rayquaza, Kyogre is a member of the Weather trio, a group of legendary Pokémon from the Hoenn region. Each member of the trio has control over a specific elemental sphere, with Kyogre being the hydropsphere, meaning it has control over all water in the Pokémon universe.

I hope you can add Kyogre to your Pokémon collection!
