Pokémon Go Johto Collection Challenge: How to complete the Collect Challenge and Johto Celebration event field research tasks

The Johto Collection Challenge is part of the Johto Celebration event in Pokémon Go, which is a lead-up event to Pokémon Go Tour: Kanto taking place in February.

Collection Challenges task you with capturing a specific Pokémon during in-game events in Pokémon Go. The Johto Collection Challenge focuses on Gen 2 Pokémon that are native to the Johto region.

These Pokémon can be found by hatching eggs, completing Johto Celebration field research tasks, catching them in the wild, or in raids.

Tips for fully completing the Johto Collection Challenge in Pokémon Go

Below you can find some tips to help you complete the Johto Collection Challenge in Pokémon Go:

  • Since Smeargle can only be found by having it photobomb your Pokémon Go snapshots, capturing it can be quite tricky if you’re unlucky. Because of this, we recommend spacing out the time you spend taking photos. Hopefully this will result in an encounter with Smeargle, without completely filling your phone gallery with random Pokémon photos.
  • Larvitar can be a difficult Pokémon to find if you’re focusing on hatching 5km eggs, so keep an eye out for one-star raids.
  • Miltank and the Johto starter Pokémon will also appear in raids during the Johto Celebration event, and thanks to Remote Raid Passes, you’ll be able to participate in raids at home.

  • Placing a Lure Module at a PokéStop will attract more Pokémon to that location, and you can determine the type using one of the special Lure Modules: Glacial, Magnetic, or Mossy.
  • Don’t forget to use incense to attract Pokémon’s location – this will work whether you’re staying inside or going for a walk!
  • Completing the Field Research tasks in the Johto Celebration event will reward you with Pokémon from the Collection Challenge. However, you may have to spin a good number of PokéStops to find the exact challenge you need.

The Season of Adventure Abundance is here! The Harvest Festival has brought Smoliv and his evolutions to Pokémon Go! You can also work on the Timed Investigation: Master Ball mission and compete in Go Battle League. Be sure to compete in Shadow Raids, complete routes, use Daily Adventure Incense for a chance to encounter Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres. This incense can also give you encounters with other rare Pokémon in Pokémon Go.

Field Research Tasks for the Johto Celebration Event in Pokémon Go

During the Johto Celebration in Pokémon Go, you will be able to collect and complete a series of field research tasks exclusive to the event. If these tasks are saved in your Field Research Collection, they can even be completed after the event ends.

Since some of these challenges will reward you with Pokémon from the Johto Collection Challenges list, it’s a good idea to complete them during the event.

These are the Johto Celebration Field Research Challenges and their rewards:

  • Use 2 Berries to help capture the Pokémon Reward: Chikorita, Totodile, or Cyndaquil Encounter.
  • Use 7 Berries to Help Catch Pokémon Reward: Miltank Encounter
  • Reward for capturing 5 Grass-type Pokémon: encounter with Sudowoodo
  • Take a snapshot of your companion’s reward: encounter with Mareep or Chinchou

How the Johto Collection Challenge works in Pokémon Go

Collection challenges in Pokémon Go launched in January 2021 and run in conjunction with certain in-game events. In each collection challenge you will be able to capture a number of Pokémon that, thanks to the event, appear more frequently in the wild.

Once you have completed the Collection Challenge by catching them all, you will be rewarded with a number of items and progress towards your Elite Collector medal.

The Johto Collection Challenge will take place in conjunction with the Johto Celebration event and will be available from Tuesday, January 26 at 10 am (local time) until Sunday, January 31, ending at 8 pm (local time).

The Collection Challenge can be found in the ‘Today View’, accessed by pressing the Field Research button (the little binoculars) in the bottom right corner of the screen. You may need to scroll left, depending on whether you’ve been analyzing your current field or special research tasks.

After accessing the ‘Today View’, you will find a list of the Pokémon you need to capture to complete the Collection Challenge. Catching a Pokémon in the Collection Challenge rooster will mark it off the list to help you keep track of which ones you’ve caught and which ones you haven’t.

Catching Pokémon will remove them from the list of collection challenges.

Remember: You must complete a Collection Challenge before the associated event ends and disappears forever.

Have fun completing the Johto Collection Challenge!
