Finding a shiny Spheal, the Applause Pokémon, is a giveaway for the next Featured Hour in Pokémon Go.
This is a highlight hour that Go Battle League fans will have been waiting for, as Spheal’s final evolution, Walrein, is a force to be reckoned with in Pokémon Go. So if you’re still missing a perfect shiny or 4* Pokémon, here’s your chance to try to find one, while also grinding out the Candy and Candy XL you’ll need to max out your Pokémon for competitive play.
This week’s Spotlight also comes with a double catch XP bonus that runs alongside the event, so be sure to catch as many Pokémon as you can!

Spheal IV stats 100% perfect in Pokémon Go
This week’s Featured Hour is a great opportunity to catch a Spheal with perfect IV stats.

“Perfect” means two things in Pokémon Go, depending on how you plan to use a given Pokémon. First, there’s the max build, 100% IV, which is the 15/15/15 you’re looking for for your 4* Pokédex, Raids, and Master League. However, because of how CP is calculated using three stats, a perfect Pokémon IV is usually just the best version of itself in the Master League.
Of course, you can’t see a Pokémon’s IV without catching it first, but with a little research beforehand, you can quickly spot a perfect Spheal based on CP alone.
If you’re at level 30 (or higher), you’ll ideally be looking for the following CPs for a perfect Spheal 15/15/15:
The wild CP value aligns with your trainer level until you reach level 30, and since the majority of the player base is now above this level, we’ve kept these values for the sake of simplicity. However, these values will be different if you are currently below level 30.
The Season of Adventure Abundance is here! Its first event is A Paldean Adventure, which sees the true launch of Gen 9 and the special research mission A Paldean Adventure. You can also work on the Timed Investigation: Master Ball mission and compete in Go Battle League. Be sure to compete in Shadow Raids, complete routes, use Daily Adventure Incense for a chance to encounter Galarian Articuno, Galarian Zapdos, and Galarian Moltres. This incense can also give you encounters with other rare Pokémon in Pokémon Go.
Is Walrein good at PvP?
Yes a lot. While Walrein has fallen out of favor as one of the most popular Pokémon in Go Battle League, following a nerf in the Summer 2022 move rebalance, it is still incredibly good and better than most players seem to think. This means that the responses to this big, chubby Pokémon may be less than what we’ve seen before, giving you ample room to exploit this hole in the meta.
Walrein
No matter your cup or league, this Pokémon performs Powder Snow, Icicle Spear, and Earthquake as a second charged move.
This combination has proven to be incredibly effective, causing the aforementioned nerf. The two Ice-type attacks charge quickly and are cheap to launch, and Earthquake is a relatively cheap, but powerful cover nuke. This leaves you with a bulky Pokémon that is incredibly spammy and flexible. It has no real drawbacks, and this coverage gives you answers to Walrein’s Electric, Grass, and Rock-type weaknesses. The only thing left unanswered is Fighting, which tends to be low volume and high damage. You’ve got big volume and big damage, so what’s not to like?
Well, the problem is the multiple Community Day moves, which makes building this Pokémon expensive in terms of MT Elite. The good news is that there was a Spheal Community Day in January 2022, and now we are in December 2022. Traditionally, there is a special Community Day (or weekend) event that allows you to evolve any Pokémon from the Community Day of that calendar year. . Assuming this goes ahead, you can turn your Spheal into a Walrein that knows both Icicle Spear and Powder Snow, which will make your life much easier. So if you catch a perfect Spheal for Go Battle League, be sure to wait to see if this event activates!
All that being said, is Walrein worth it? Let’s take a look, league by league.
While Walrein is no longer the best Walrus in the Great League, he sits comfortably in the top five, picking up wins against Altaria, Galarian Stunfisk, Sableye, Trevenant, and Swampert. He loses quite a bit to Scrafty, Medicham, Skarmory, Umbreon, and Bastiodon, putting him very high in the meta. If you’re interested in a perfect Great League Walrein, you’ll want a 0/12/15 at level 21.
Meanwhile, Shadow Walrein remains one of the two best Ice-types in the Ultra League, thanks to defeating Nidoqueen, Trevenant, Giratina, and Swampert, all of which feature on our Ultra League recommendation list. However, he loses to Scrafty (again), Cresellia, Obstagoon, Talonflame, and (most importantly) Shadow Swampert. If you think this is part of a cool build, a perfect Ultra League Walrein is a 0/15/15 at level 39.5. The normal version will also work, but it won’t win as many games.
Entering the world of Master League, Walrein is respectable. He is not in the top five Ice types, but will hold his own against all non-Steel type dragons, along with Excadrill and Groudon, but will lose to Zacian, Mewtwo, Lugia, and even Gyarados.
Is there a shiny Spheal in Pokémon Go?
Yes, there is a shiny Spheal in Pokémon Go and it’s an amazing purple color!

Spheal’s shiny form was released in December 2021. If you catch one, you can turn it into a shiny Walrein; however, you will need 125 Spheal Candy to do so.
If luck is on your side, you may find a Shiny Spheal in the wild, but keep in mind that this is not a Community Day and shine rates do not increase, so the chances of catching one, and much less a perfect one, they are very low. . That said, every Spheal you see has the potential to be brilliant, so it’s purely a numbers game: tap each and every one of them and see what you get. Good luck finding the Spheal you need!
What does shiny Spheal look like?
As you can see, the bright Spheal follows the tradition of blue turning into purple. Its evolutions, Sealeo and Walrein, do the same, with the latter taking on a darker purple color, as expected. All in all, a great set of glitters!

Other tips for this hour of attention
Besides trying to catch a shiny Spheal in Pokémon Go, there are a couple of other good reasons to participate in this week’s Spotlight:
- The best reason is, of course, the double catch XP bonus that runs throughout the hour. This applies to all captured Pokémon, so try your best to get good at excellent curveball throws on a Spheal to rack up XP quickly.
- If you’re a newcomer, this Featured Hour is the perfect time to collect enough Spheal Candy to fully evolve this Pokémon and enter all of its evolutions into the Pokédex.
- Thanks to Spheal being an Ice/Water type, capturing a bunch during this Featured Hour will add progress to your respective capture bonus medals.
