A Shadowy Disturbance, released during the Solstice Horizons event in June 2023, is the latest installment of Pokémon Go’s Team Go Rocket invasion story.
Like previous Team Go Rocket special research missions in Pokémon Go, the A Shadowy Disturbance mission steps task you with defeating Rocket Grunts and the leaders of Team Go Rocket.
All of this will lead you to a battle against Giovanni and if you defeat him, you will be able to capture his last Legendary Shadow Pokémon: Shadow Regirock.

Remember: To access this quest, you may need to complete your previous Team Go Rocket research quest, which began with A Worrying Situation in 2019. The last quest released in Team Rocket history was From the Shadows.

Rewards: 1000 XP, 1000 Stardust and an encounter with Aron.
‘A Grim Riot’ Step 2 of 5
- Catch 15 Pokémon: 5 Pineapple Berries
- Transfer 10 Pokémon – 10 Big Balls
- Defeat 6 Team Go Rocket Grunts: 3 Mysterious Components
Rewards: 1500 XP, 1500 Stardust, and an encounter with Graveler.

- Defeat Team Go Rocket leader Arlo – 2500 XP
- Defeat Team Go Leader Rocket Cliff – 2500 XP
- Defeat Team Go Rocket leader Sierra – 2500 XP

How A Shadow Disturbance works in Pokémon Go
A Shadowy Disturbance, which launched in June 2023 during the Solstice Horizons event, is part of Team Go Rocket’s story in Pokémon Go.
To access this research mission, you must first complete the ‘tutorial’ mission, A Worrying Situation. You may also need to complete any previous Team Go Rocket special research missions, such as From The Shadows.
Each Team Go Rocket mission is based on defeating the criminal organization’s grunts and purifying Shadow Pokémon, which can be found in invaded PokéStops around the world.
You will also have to fight the leaders Arlo, Cliff and Sierra and, eventually, Giovanni.
It’s also important to remember that the featured Shadow Legendary released alongside the debut of this quest, Shadow Regirock in the case of A Shadowy Disturbance, is not technically part of the quest itself, but is simply an additional reward for fighting Giovanni. Because of this, you can catch the current Shadow Legendary at least twice if you haven’t already finished the previous Team Go Rocket mission.
Aside from this, Team Go Rocket missions work exactly the same as the other investigation missions, challenging you to complete a series of objectives in a specific order.
Since Team Go Rocket missions do not expire, you will have plenty of time to complete A Shadowy Disturbance. However, we recommend that you make sure to complete it, because you will not be able to access the new mission in the series, which is usually released every three months, until you do.

Tips for completing A Shadow Disturbance in Pokémon Go
Below you will find some tips to help you complete A Shadowy Disturbance in Pokémon Go:
- Don’t forget to use Pinap Berries when catching Shadow Pokémon to ensure you collect enough candy to purify the Pokémon once it’s yours.
- Keep an eye out for the Team Go Rocket balloons, because the grunt, Team Go leader, and even Giovanni’s battles you find through them count towards this mission.
- Be sure to check the lineup possibilities before fighting the three leaders of Team Go Rocket and Giovanni, so you can plan an effective counterattack team.
- Since both the Leaders and Giovanni have a selection of Pokémon they can use, it’s a good idea to explore their team before properly defeating them, as long as you have some healing items on standby for this first “trail” encounter. You can do this by using a Pokémon that is guaranteed to defeat this first Pokémon, which will always be the same, and once you know what its second choice is, you can plan accordingly. Just remember that their lineup can change if you move to a different PokéStop.
