How ‘A Challenging Development’ works in Pokémon Go

A challenging development is the Giovanni Special Investigation quest line from December 2019. It continues the plot of Looming in the Shadows and A Worrying Situation.

The only way to start A Challenging Development is to have already completed Looming in the Shadows the previous month.

If you haven’t completed Looming in the Shadows yet, when you do, it will count as your Team Go Rocket special research task set for that month and you’ll have to wait until the next month to continue the story. .

A challenging development will allow you to continue the fight against Team Go Rocket; forcing them to flee from PokéStops, while also capturing and purifying their Shadow Pokémon. Eventually, you’ll find yourself using Rocket Radar to hunt down the leaders of Team Go Rocket.

The mission consists of six steps, each of which consists of three individual challenges. You will be rewarded for each individual challenge and each general step you complete.

These rewards will include the chance to battle Giovanni and the chance to capture that month’s Legendary Dark Pokémon, such as Shadow Zapdos, if you complete the questline in December 2019.

Here are some tips to help you complete A Challenging Development:

  • A challenging development is Giovanni’s special research mission, which also lasts a month.
  • The Shadow Pokémon you receive for completing A Challenging Development will change depending on the month in which you complete the Special Research task set. If you complete it in December 2019, for example, you will be able to catch Shadow Zapdos.

  • Stock up on potions and revives before battling a Team Go Rocket Grunt, because Shadow Pokémon are much stronger than regular Pokémon.
  • PokéStops that have been invaded by Team Go Rocket discolor and shake when you approach them.
  • Using Razz and Nanab Berries will help you catch any Shadow Pokémon you encounter.
  • Once you’ve created a Rocket Radar, you won’t be able to collect any more Mystery Components until you use it, so keep an eye on the contents of your bag.
  • The leaders of Team Go Rocket are much stronger than any of the Grunts, so make sure the Pokémon you choose is a good match for their Pokémon.

Good luck foiling Team Go Rocket’s evil plans!
