New Pokémon Snap - Shiver Snowfields Alternative Route: How to unlock the alternate route for the Snowfields Day and Night courses explained

Unlocking the alternate route for Shiver Snowfields courses in New Pokémon Snap will give you the opportunity to photograph a wider variety of Pokémon, including Dewgong and the legendary Suicune.

However, the actual process of unlocking this new route can be quite complicated, as you will have to visit both the Snowfields Circuit (day) and the Snowfields Course (night).

Fortunately, once unlocked, this alternate route will be permanently available at specific research levels.

Shiver Snowfields Alternate Route in New Pokémon Snap Explained

Several of the New Pokémon Snap courses have alternate routes at certain research levels that will allow you to take photos of new Pokémon. Some of these routes will be available automatically, while others will require unlocking.

The alternate route for the Shiver Snowfields day and night courses is one of the most complex paths to find because its unlocking process is divided into two sets of steps.

You must unlock the alternate route to find all the Pokémon in the Snowfield courses.

To fully unlock the alternate route, you must access the first area during the Snowfields (Day) course and then complete your journey during Snowfields (Night). Don’t try to make them messy or you’ll find yourself facing a wall of snow!

However, once you have successfully unlocked the alternate route, it will always be available at Research Level 2 and 3 for Snow Fields (Day) and at Research Level 2 for Snow Fields (Night).

Remember: you must unlock the full alternate route for Shiver Snowfields if you want to photograph Suicune.

How to Unlock the Shiver Snowfields Alternate Route in New Pokémon Snap

The process to unlock the Shiver Snowfields alternate route in New Pokémon Snap is divided into two sets of steps across the two Snowfields courses. These steps must be completed in order or you will not be able to use this new route.

Snowfields (day) – Research Level 2

To start, you need to play the Snowfields (Day) course at Research Level 2.

When the tour begins, look to your left and wait for an Alolan Sandslash to appear on the hill and take a photo once it appears.

Doing so will cause Alolan Sandslash to bury itself in the snow and reappear later on top of another hill right in front of the small igloo. This is also the one close to Beartic at the beginning of this course.

The Sandslash will next appear at the top of this hill.

This will, again, cause Sandslash to disappear into the snow and will now appear in front of the Neo-One before disappearing into the snowbank.

Now you need to scan and take the alternate route through the snowbank to a new area.

With this achieved and the new area permanently unlocked, you must now visit the Snowfields (Night) course at Research Level 2 to finish unlocking the alternate course.

Snowy Fields (Night) – Research Level 2

Your first task in Snowfields (Night) is to get to the new area you unlocked during Snowfields (Day).

Once there, you will see a Crabominable to your right. Watch as it moves to the left side of the path, and when it starts hitting a tree, throw an Illumina Orb at it.

Hit Crabominable with an Illumina Orb to anger Abomasnow.

This causes some snow to fall on the nearby Abomasnow, which will, in turn, anger this Pokémon and cause a Froslass to fly in front of you.

Quickly take a photo of Froslass and it will change course to traverse the snowbank to your right.

Scan when prompted as you approach this snowbank and you can take the second alternate route for the Shiver Snowfields courses.

This new area allows you to photograph Dewgong, Avalugg, Aurorus, and Suicune, all of which will not appear anywhere else in Shiver Snowfields.

Once you have finished the current course, the full alternate route for Shiver Snowfields will now unlock in Snowfields (Night) in Research Level 2 and Snowfields (Day) in Investigations 2 and 3.
