World Water Day 2023: Since 1993, it has been celebrated on March 22 to highlight the importance of fresh water. According to the UN, around 2.2 billion people live without access to drinking water. The day focuses on taking action to address the global water crisis. According to the UN, the Asia-Pacific region has the lowest per capita water availability in the world and groundwater use in the region is expected to increase by 30% by 2050.
About 40 percent of all water used for irrigation comes from aquifers. Furthermore, almost all of the world’s liquid fresh water is groundwater.
World Water Day is celebrated every year on March 22 around the world. Focus attention on the importance of water and how to preserve it. As we know that water is essential for life, without water we cannot survive. Up to 60% of the adult human body is water. All plants and animals need water to survive. World Water Day 2023: Theme
The theme of World Water Day 2023 is ‘Accelerating Change’. According to the World Water Organization, “This World Water Day is about accelerating change to solve the water and sanitation crisis. And since water affects us all, we need all of us to act. You and your family, school and community can make a difference by changing the way you use, consume and manage water in your lives. Their commitments will be added to the Water Action Agenda, which will be launched at the 2023 United Nations Water Conference, the first event of its kind in almost 50 years. “This is a once-in-a-generation moment for the world to unite around water.”
The theme of World Water Day 2022 is “Groundwater: making the invisible visible”. The topic was proposed by IGRAC. Groundwater is a crucial resource, providing almost half of the world’s drinking water, around 40% for irrigated agriculture, and around 1/3 of the water needed for industry. Groundwater is important for the healthy functioning of ecosystems, including wetlands and rivers.
The theme of World Water Day 2021 was “Valuing Water”. It is necessary to understand the importance of water and its use. Water has extensive and complex value for our homes, food, culture, health, education, etc.
The theme of World Water Day 2019 was “Leave no one behind” and in 2018 it was “Nature for Water” or “Nature-based Water Solutions”. Mainly focusing attention on the importance of water. This theme adapts the central promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development that as sustainable development advances, everyone must benefit. Let us tell you that Sustainable Development Goal 6 is crystal clear that it is water for everyone in 2030. And according to the definition. It means leaving no one behind.
World Water Day: History
We know that around the world on March 22, World Water Day is celebrated. In 1993, the United Nations General Assembly decided to celebrate this day as an annual event to raise people’s awareness of the need and conservation of water. Officially it was added for the first time in program 21 of the “United Nations Conference on Environment and Development” in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. And starting in 1993, World Water Day celebrations began to motivate people about the importance of water.

Purpose of celebrating World Water Day
The United Nations and member nations celebrate this day by organizing campaigns and promoting global water conservation through real activities. Basically, every year this campaign is promoted by UN agencies to encourage people, make them understand water problems and also coordinate with international activities for World Water Day. UN-Water is also responsible for selecting the World Water Day theme, distributing messages globally, etc. In fact, along with UN members and agencies, several NGOs and non-governmental organizations engage in advocacy activities to raise awareness among people. All water issues are highlighted during this event and campaign. Therefore, now is the time to take steps forward and unite to conserve our precious natural resources. Save water, save life!
